Starting to MTB

Probably been posted a million times before, but I couldn’t find any. My homies are getting into mountain biking and I’m interested in it too, but I have absolutely no knowledge on it. Anyone have some good tips / resources / guides?

Buy a decent bike from a bike shop. Not a piece of shit from wal-mart. Buy a good helmet that actually fits. Focus on getting out and riding, and make sure to always have fun. Focus on learning basic techniques like cornering and pumping.

pinkbike b/s/t is still the best. pinkbike.com is kinda like newschoolers for biking, though Outside mag took it over not long ago.

Pink bike is the best bet to find something in your price range. Buying used takes time, patience and determination. Ask for receipt and documentations when you buy used.
New is safer, easier and you get a over the top ride. Here is a few pointers that coupd help learn about bikes.

1. Do you wanna ride up, down, only down, jumper or all around? Before even looking at bikes, ask that question. It will help narrow the field. Biking gear is a huge industry that is easy to loose yourself in.
2. Always buy top notch as much as money will allow. Dont fall for the “ill buy cheap, then upgrade” trap. Componants in a group get a huge discount. I bought a new fork for 1100$, basically 1/3 of the bikes original value. You will also be stuck with parts being fazed out and unable to get spares.

3. Read bike porn. MTB Action, Rider… those mags will let you see what is the best and then compare what specs are important to you.

4. Rent out bikes! Try as many bikes as you can. Try your friends bikes and see what works for you. Frame geometry goes a long way but dont bother with the numbers; just try as many as possible.

i feel like enduro's wouldn't be a great beginner bike. Ik they're what everyone is riding rn but its probably way to much bike for someone starting out, and a trail or "all mtn" bike can bring a beginner to steep chunky stuff, jumps, bike park, xc, kinda everything before they decide to spend the money on an enduro.

i guess you're right. I got one because i prefer it to ride local trails that I couldn't with my Kona Entourage DH bike. I progressed greatly by trail riding and climbing. So yea anything all mountain would be preferable.

Are downduro bikes a myth? Thinking of getting my first full suspension as a DH bike which afterwards convert it to a enduro with DH fork to use as a climb bike and dh

Do not be afraid to buy a bike that seems to be too advanced for your current skill level. Its better to get a bike that will support your progression, and not one that you will outgrow after a season of riding. The progression with mountain biking happens pretty quickly, especially for those that have a strong ski background.

That's super good advice. Fork out the cash now instead of buying multiple bikes as you progress. Also, if you're tight on cash go hardtail, you can get a much nicer bike for the same price as a not so great full suspension.
