I work at woodward PC so I regularly see the latest trendwhores. This season the trend seems to be wearing nascar gear and just generally trying to look as white trash as possible. Kinda gross imo. Why can’t we just b ourselves instead of pretending to be gangsters in the 2000’s or rednecks now. Generally seems to be the dustbox types and their followers but even see some skiers participating. On that note I wonder why skiing and boarding are so trend driven? More so than other sports/activities it seems like everyone wants to look exactly like everyone else. Edited to add: maybe we are so trend driven because the skier/snowboarder demographic, mostly rich white dudes, has the least real culture of our own

Upon further reflection I think the nascar thing might be in part just that we are in utah and Im not used to there being much overlap between the nascar crowd and the snowsports crowd but here there is. In other words maybe in Utah people just have a bit of a redneck tinge to them but I still think my prior thoughts are valid

Zeb Powell has been on the nascar jacket for a minute. That’s really the first time I can think of seeing them on hill. Then couple it with the Donny Pelletier character and there you go

Utah people don’t show their redneck in the winter on the hill, but once it starts getting warm out it starts to show

Nascar gear in general has become very popular. Oddly enough a lot of the people wearing the stuff have no clue who they’re wearing driver wise or generally know nothing about nascar. Kind of ironic nascar has become a fashion statement.

I follow all racing so I’ll always ask when I see someone wearing something.

then I get the answer “oh this? No I don’t watch nascar. Just thought the shirt/jacket is cool”

Cuz most of us are rednecks originally? most people who are deep into that look are from small town midwest and idaho/montana. What probably adds to it is:

- everyone from SLC wants to live in Bozeman
- everyone from Bozeman wants to live in Missoula
- everyone from Missoula wants to live in rural Alberta

I used to work there as well. It's honestly shocking how that place hasn't been sold-off yet. Retarded-ass management and clientele. It's literally a Daycare center for Rich PC moms or shithead boarder bums too broke to go ride elsewhere.

i have been doing this for a while, didn’t know it being a trend other than seeing a person once in a while wearing something similar. That is just because I thrifted one a long while ago and use it everywhere, and the fact that I dont own a ”ski jacket” but always wear a hoodie or a thrifted jacket that can be trashed or will last. Just my experience and reasoning

Triggered? Sorry if u don’t think of urself as rich but I bet you or your family make more than the average American. I would also bet that at least 90% of skiers and 90% of Newschoolers make or have parents who make above average income. Median American salary is slightly above 40k. If you make more than that you are rich relative to half the population. Of course on NS there’s lots of ski bums like myself surviving on less than lets say 2k a month. I can cover all my expenses living on approx $1750 a month but if I ever was in a bad place I know my parents wouldnt hesitate to help me out, I think this is the case with the majority of us so called “ski bums.” IN CONCLUSION skiers generally come from rich/ priveleged backgrounds. You may feel very middle class or even poor but the average ns member is far better off in personal income or otherwise family support than the average American and certainly the average earthling. I grew up with parents making about 150 k combined supporting 3 kids. House I grew up in is worth about 400k now. We had one car. Now that I’m an adult I don’t receive any support but have the safety net of my family if anything goes wrong. This may sound quite middle class to you but that is in fact (relatively speaking) privileged/rich.

growing up skiing in NM and Southern Co the Texas tourist special was always jeans and a starter jacket. Nothing new to see here I suppose?

I would say it's probably more of a generational thing than a specific demographic. With the relevance and value of social media in the skiing community between kids aged ~12-18 (as of 2023), it's kind of inevitable that you yield more "trend followers".
