On January 20th, I shattered both of my heel bones "Calcaneous" into 5+ pieces. I was attempting to jump off a cliff over a cat track and I cased the cat track and ended up shattering both of my heels. The cliff was just under 15 feet vertical and I cased approximately 20 feet from the cliff. I spent a couple of nights in the Hospital, then went home to wait for the swelling to go down so they could do reconstructive surgery on my heels. I had surgery on both feet the first week of February, it was 9-hour surgery and according to the surgeon, there were zero complications. They put 13-15 screws in each foot along with a plate to hold it all together. I have been in a wheelchair ever since the accident but I am now learning how to stand up straight with little support and am learning how to walk in the pool. I have tried crutches but it is pretty hard with both feet being injured. I am a senior in High School and I am headed to Montana for college next year, the main reason I chose to go to MSU was that I wanted to be close to the ski mountains. The surgeon said I will be able to ski again next season as long as I stay on top of my PT.
I am mainly looking for advice to get me ready for skiing next year. What boots to get to ensure my feet are safe? Will I be able to hit big jumps still? Anyone else have a similar injury? If so how was skiing the next season?
