bogustThe snow forecast predicted 18 inches for the next day but that night I had a dream where I woke up and there was 5 inches of sleet outside and it was raining. I got so bummed out in the dream that I woke up for for real, only to look outside and see 30 inches of snow on the ground with it still dumping like crazy. By the end of the day I was skiing 44 inches of blower powder

stokedelicprobably realizing my love for skiing still exists, i just have to go get it. so many resorts suck now, i can’t help but be jaded and nostalgic when i’m stuck in traffic/lines.
touring and independent resorts still have what i’m looking for, even the “big snow” mountains monday-thursday still hold their magic. basically blossoming out of weekend warrior to full on playing hooky at work ;). quiet, happy people who love winter.
one of my skater friends the other day said “snow sports are for jocks” and i can’t help but feel some weight in that. aside from “comp jocks”, there’s so many 20-40 year olds now that were high school/college athletes that now picked up skiing cause they feel worthless. and now they’re try hards wearing this years picture organic/arcteryx kits and 5 voile straps on their poles.
idk, ski culture never felt like that before covid to me. in my experience the bad asses rock 5 year old gear they repair themselves, so all these new people look like clowns. don’t even get me started on gaper day. it’s now our equivalent of “go skate day”, and i avoid it all together.
what i’m trying to say is getting lost in the woods safely is my favorite thing to do. i don’t care if you’re better than me former D1 hockey player (still probably aren’t tho), get away from me i’m tryna eat my pocket skittles and eat face shots.
pdizzMy kids progressed from the bunny hill and started doing real runs with me
CantThinkOfaNameA girl winked at me with both eyes, now we’re dating but she doesn’t know yet

MastePoleWhackerResonating super hard with this. Especially in my senior year at u of u this place is a hotspot for ski jocks. Everyone has this inflated ego and wants to go pro/talks themselves up, it’s super cringe. Leads to just a weird campus atmosphere, but I don’t really care at this point since I’ve luckily been able to remove myself from it and met some likeminded friends who just want to ski.
like don’t get me wrong I played football in high school, but skiing isn’t some weird way to “relive the glory days”, skiing should be a way to escape society for a couple hours a couple days a week and go live it up with your people. Hell we can’t even be assed to take our phones out of our pockets for 30 seconds to try and get a clip, it just feels like a waste of time when we could be ripping around and having a blast.
I’m 100% certain that social media is at least partially to blame for this, everyone wants to put reels and tik toks up so everyone else can know how good they are but especially in salt lake it leads to this crazy hardo atmosphere that wasn’t there nearly as much back when I lived in Tacoma

edits are cool and all but i focus on skiing first, then telling other people. my funnest days have little/no videos because i’m skiing the whole time
also learning to enjoy the sport for yourself is important. i definitely don’t ski to fit in i just do it because i love to do it. no pressure, just have fun
Brother_truckerDamn straight :-) The only time I get filmed is when someone else is deciding to do it, sometimes you get the feeling the film is more important than the doing... Had a few people offering to film me this season, while building off piste step ups and around the park. To be fair mostly I'm not interested, it is more about the memories in my head, and the sensation of doing it. Love the sport, and the send. I've been doing it now for about 45 years, still ride park, though I don't try so hard these days following the usual injuries over the years of trying harder. So mostly do up to XL kickers (conditions depending) with hangin shifties enjoying the view while I'm up there. Occasionally I get young uns asking me if I can't spin or something in a slightly disparaging way, like I did last year... mostly they think I'm in my 20's, til I tell em :-) Getting old brings some level of responsibility, plus now that I'm near 50 if get a solid injury it could end it all. They tend to understand once they know. But it is interesting that anyone actually cares what you're doing on a park run. I get it if you're in competition, then you want to be winning, but free skiing, hell just enjoy the fact that there are others doing it too. Anyone being in the park doing it is good, straight air, spins, flips, whatevs... cause if they aren't there it won't be long before the resort doesn't make any parks anymore..... Maybe this is just the wisdom of old age :-)
Mr.WhatsittoyaBest pow day of the year
