Replying to Dying Topsheets

I've seen people dye stuff like lacrosse heads and ski boots. Has anyone ever used dye on a ski topsheet? I'd imagine you either need to do something to protect the bases like a fat layer of wax or just get your bases resurfaced after. I'm kinda sick of my current topsheets and wanna just dye them black. I've painted topsheets before and it always seems to chip after a few days even if I use a ton of clear coat. Curious about your paint recommendations if you think dying skis is a terrible idea.
