How to detune your skis video

Nice instructions! I have always just used a file and detuned under my boot and slighty under bundings. You can get file for like 15-20e and detune on the parking lot if you dont have bench and grinder. Start from base side on a low angle and increase it after every pass. You can ofc fuck it up if you really try, but not nearly as easy with a grinder, wich is a bit too heavy equipment for my taste. There are many ways to detune for example people in LineTC 15.3 BTS&Extras detuned from front all the way to back with a grinder :D

always used chainsaw files and gumstones. i preffer hand tools, feel like i have more control. a friend used a grinder and made a nasty cut in his skis, ever since i would not use power tools on my edges.

Thanks. IMHO it's the only way to do it. Either a proper detune to maximize the longevity of your skis & their performance on rails (& minimize the damage to the carving attributes by detuning only where you need/want to), or no detune at all, sharping the shit out of your edges like the racers do and maximize the carving attributes.

Comparing it to mounting your bindings. You don't just throw the bindings on the skis, drill the holes and screw the bindings to wherever they end up on the ski.

You weigh different mounting points on that particular ski of yours which give you different performance. You need to take the BSL & DIN to account etc. and even different bindings to best suit your needs.

Chainsaw files? Like rat tails? Doesn't that leave a lumpy texture?

I use a Dremel with a metal cutting/grinding disc, then a fine sanding drum and polishing pads.

i use one of these, we have a fuck ton of them at home since my father used to work for stihl. they are for sharpening the teeth of the chain. it's very effective and leaves a good result. the gummystone is my preffered method though.

A couple passes will give decent rail performance but will also leave the edge of the edge vulnerable to cracks. Why don't you go full monty?

Seems like a lot of work for park skis.. i usually just find a little rock or piece of pavement and dull the fuck out of the edges underfoot and a little bit more past the heal and toe. Whats the benefit of the special tools?

You can get a really rounded smooth edge under foot with a smooth clean transition to the sharper portion as you get away from the bindings. It takes like 20 minutes and will reduce likelihood of edge cracks significantly.

I wish my dad worked for Stihl...I've spent a lot of money on garden equipment and power tools with them over the years.

I’ve got no edge crack so far after skiing on them this whole season. I ski in the Midwest so I need some edge.
