I always get these articles recommended to me about how bad the ski seasons in the alps are getting because of climate change, it’s actually scaring me to an extent that maybe in 10 years or so there might not be enough snow. Is it really that bad as the media makes it? Or are we super fucked
There will be a period of time where we will have more extreme winters, wet and dry. Snow levels will slowly rise, without any change it could be 10 - 20 years and lower elevation/warmer areas will have a much harder time operating ski resorts.

in that sentence he meant the rain/snow line will rise. you know, like when a storm hits you and down at your house it's rain but at some point between your altitude and the summit of your mtn, it changes over to snow. "snow level rising" in that context means that that altitude where it's snow rather than stupid rain will tend to be higher and higher. like, maybe it's raining halfway up the mtn as well, or at least at the base
So my guess is yes we are fucked. But, importantly I think the larger variation will play a huge role in addition to the overall warming.
So we will still have big years, probably even bigger snow years. But worse and worse drought years, forcing snowy mountains to rely more and more on snowmaking during bad winters, and mountains at the edge now might have to shut down entirely on low snow years.

I think you see the lower elevation coastal areas already making changes to accommodate more volatile winters. More aggressive brushing programs so they can open with less base, increased snowmaking, pass holder models include multiple resorts, guarantees etc. Increased hotel development, apres activities like breweries etc can generate money from non skiers, mountain biking programs in the summer, uphill policies and passes, all this stuff has one eye on the fact that they are hedging their bets on todays snowpack being sustainable. Adapt or die, as they say.
That being said so far Climate Change in the PNW seems to just mean stronger storms with more moisture and energy. If you believe the modeling that trend will continue but the snow level will just be higher and higher on average.
It’s already happened though before most of our time; winters in New England used to get enough snow that ski areas were viable even in southern parts of the region. Even Rhode Island had 4 ski areas, now down to Yawgoo after the other 3 closed in the 80s due to diminishing snowfall.
As weather becomes more unpredictable and water scarcity increases we’re going to see another wave of closures among independently run ski areas especially those on state and federal parklands already dealing with water use restrictions.

Absolutely. I'm 23, been skiing for 10 years; grew up skiing the east. My first few seasons, my local was open end of November like clockwork, maybe a week or so past; some years earlier. Now they struggle to open before January, most of the resorts in my area (Mid-Atlantic) don't even have half their trails open. In the past few winters temps and precip has become so much more random and variable; shit I'm wearing shorts today and it was 40 yesterday.
I move to Utah at the end of the year but I fear that will only stave off my reality of climate change for a while until higher elevation areas become affected more. Sad that so many people my age seem to not care, or act like its not a real issue. Not really sure what can be done to reverse course, but I think its up to climate conscious people like us to spread awareness about how were messing with the climate, some people will listen.

Too lazy to wholeheartedly respond, but I totally agree. POW is already a start, but clearly not enough to make a significant change. It’s up to governments and countries in the long run, which isn’t the best thing.

Ive got a POW sticker on the back of my subie so I suppose thats a step in the right direction haha. But we really do need to Protect Our Winters. lol
It will take more than 10 years to not have enough snow in the Alps to ski, but we will see an increase of man-made snowmaking and use of snow preservation tech everywhere in our lifetime, and resorts taking on other offerings like mountain biking in order to survive with shorter seasons. People in their 30s and younger who live into old age will see big industry changes at the tail end of their lifetimes, I think, depending on how well we curb things (or not).
It's easy to get bogged down and feel hopeless, but it's not something individuals can solve singlehandedly. You can enjoy the skiing we have now for years to come yet. Your kids if any, not sure. They might have to relocate to ski.

i mean the ski industry and resort industry kinda has it coming imo. Kind-of an act of god if you will for treating people like shit for so long because you get a free pass or whatever.
im only kidding of course. Who the fuck knows? Its not the climate but the leadership and management that will doom this industry.

The bending of space time by matter is what causes the gravitational acceleration, not necessarily the idea that the earth is accelerating towards you 🤓
But yeah if you know a lick about analytical modeling you understand the odds of a successful model are significantly lower than a failed one. Many models are laughable at best and holes can be poked in them a trillion ways.
But it's easier to convince someone bs than to convince them they've been swindled. People will willingly agree to make their lives more difficult if there's enough appeal to authority telling them to do so.

Also, climate change is definitely real. You can go to nasas website and download both the raw satellite images and their calculation for arctic sea ice extent from the beginning of their records. We did a project in a class I took where we had to write a code to calculate the extent from each picture ourselves and they matched up. The trend also showed that within the next 10 or 20 years, there will be summers where there is no ice in the arctic. This isn’t “leftist child scaring propaganda”, it’s one of countless examples of empirical evidence of climate change.

Our winters have been getting really bad here in Ohio for the past 10 years. I wonder how long it will be before some of the hills around here close, some of them really struggle to even stay open from mid dec-early march
