Someone’s wife gave me a bad review

it’s my first year ski instructing and this older guy who i taught quit halfway through the lesson saying he didn’t want to fall and look like an ass, and then his wife wrote me a bad review later.

I'd justify this to myself by saying "they quit before it got to the good part!"
But then I'd realize that the kind of guy to quit halfway through something like learning to ski is just a big baby and his wife came in with the review to save his pride... "No honey, I'm never going back, it was the instructors fault not mine!"

I had a similar thing happen my first year. Just try to make it fun for them even if they don’t get it. I also sometimes tell people that learning to ski is awkward and everyone on the bunny hill is going through it too

For sure. I mean still trying to connect with the people and help them learn. Not mailing it in because you're burnt out. But yeah. Can't dwell on shit too long. People are assholes.

Def had some shitty lessons and got screamed at by the agro owner of a ski area, but at least people didn't write reviews about lessons when I taught. That's whack. I only made it 3 years. I respect people that do it long term and stay stoked on it. I did it from 14-17 and was already pretty over it. If I didn't get fired ish for building a jump and asked to help in parks, I probably only had a few more years of it in me. Shit crushes your soul if you let it.

OP, can you write a diss track as a reply to the review? There should def be that option.

If someone doesn't want to learn how to ski then maybe they shouldn't book a ski lesson.

Bitch ass move to leave a negative review.

I would ask some coworkers (preferably someone with alot of experience) about what they would have done in that situation (during the lesson).

Aaaghk ski school shenanigans make my blood boil. Throwback to the one time some lady tried to get one of my coworkers to do a lesson under the table for her kid cuz we were booked. In front of our supervisor, then when the instructor said no to the under the table lesson because it would get her fired. the lady flipped and tried to get the instructor fired for “coercing her for an unsanctioned lesson”. That shit was psychotic. My supervisor then bitched the lady out and told that psycho that if they ever tried to book another lesson with us that they would contact the cops cuz the psycho mom was about to throw hands.

ironically that coworker got fired 2 weeks later for calling in from work to go to a hockey game the day of under the excuse of “it’s my grandmas funeral”

plz share more fucked instructor stories cuz I also have a lot from the literal single season i was an instructor and I love them!!!

You don't teach them. I think they usually just want to be guided around the mountain.

The worst I had was a 12 year old sit on the snow right in front of the belt on real busy day and starting throwing a fit. Real fun when you're not allowed to physically move them out of the way. Same kid told he didn't have to listen to me because I was boring him.

Next time you have 2 siblings or a husband and wife or someone with the same email address, switch one to my email address and I’ll write a fuckin masterpiece. I’ll do that for anyone on this site looking for career advancement within the ski industry lol

While I'm sure the people sucked, there are some things I think its important to remember when teaching. Avoid using phrases like "just bend your knees, just use your pizza, just keep your weight forward, just do this" etc. For a lot of new people skiing is really hard, not to mention cold, exhausting, overstimulating, and scary. When you make it sound easy it can feel condescending and makes people frustrated. The last thing you want when you're scared, cold, exhausted and constantly falling is someone making it seem like what you're trying to do isn't even hard. Within the first few minutes, after you get a feel for their level of skill, give them a very attainable goal for the end of the lesson, and validate their struggle to accomplish it. Instead of putting them in a situation where they are in over their head, and you keep telling them what they did wrong, keep them in their comfort zone and give them a clear next step so that they can push forward when they start feeling confident. Keep them safe, make sure they have fun, THEN try to improve their skiing.

Its not fair, but there's almost definitely an age and a gender element to it as well. If you're eating shit while getting smoked by a girl half your age it can bruise your ego a bit, especially if she's making it feel like its not even that hard. Not much you can do about that except try to be empathetic and supportive of their struggle, and if they still can't handle it, brushing it off because thats ultimately their problem.

I had a cantankerous old man who was talking some shit. So I took him to a steep run and told him to work on a carve. Basically I humbled him and he was great and stoked the rest of the lesson. Really odd how that one worked out

Instructing adults sounds like a fucking nightmare. God bless you for doing that. I thought coaching U18 freeride kids was tough, but having to deal with wealthy kooks on vacation would be awful. If I were you, I'd try to volunteer or work for some organizations that specialize in getting people from underrepresented communities on snow. Rich people don't need to know how to ski.

teaching is good but yeah i do wish i could be sharing skiing with better people. i wanted the free pass (since everything is expensive) and also to get free friend passes so i could get more friends into skiing.

You're on the right track dude. The passion is there. I still coach PT as a patroller myself (Also for the free pass to go ski with my friends), but thats noble to say the least. Instructing is kind of a huge racket when it comes to bigger resorts though, be warned. So many politics and PSIA bullshit going down. I'm on my soapbox here but its all boomers who are semi-retired and want free skiing when they know damn-well they can afford it on their own, but gear deals and a pass are hard to pass up. Just stand your ground and don't let those old-fogeys tell you too much. Find your own system and the kiddos will love it.

Oh no, I was begging for adults when I instructed. Right now 90% of my guiding/instructing/facilitation in the outdoors is teenagers but when I get adults it is the most refreshing thing.

My similar story is I had a middle aged woman who couldn’t figure out how to stop or turn during the whole lesson. She sent an angry email to my manager speaking badly of me and asking for a refund because she didn’t get to ride the chairlift. Luckily my manager knew what happened and stuck up for me.

Yeah man I much preferred adults too. They actually get concepts when you break it down. Sometimes with kids, it feels like explaining something 8,000 different ways until it clicks

I sleep good knowing people make up their own problems by being difficult & their attitude has probably ruined many more things in their life than just one ski lesson. If some old dude doesn’t wanna learn… well he paid already which means I’m getting paid too 🤷‍♀️

If you want to fuck an older gaper over for life convince them that ski boots are like hockey skates and need to be tightened as much as possible especially the middle two buckles and its OK to have a friend step on the buckles to lock them its OK to be like the kids who had their parents tie their skates.

most instructor jobs are a joke. If you’re a good enough teacher, build a clientele and ask them to book you privately not through the resort, you’ll make more money and they’ll spend less. You’ll also find out that because you’re making more and have a solid connection, you’ll give more of a shit about it.
