Is an HVX 200 the best cam?

Everybody wants to get clips and everybody wants to get the best lookin clips. Is there a better option than a hvx? I know the old cams are a heavy and hard to download clips off a p2 card but they look sick. Is there any better cam out there for around a band?

The HMC150 is similar to the HVX/HPX using an SD card but it lacks the depth and color of the P2 cameras while usually being priced at twice as much

the color depth is destroyed when you upload online...

the hmc150 and hvx200 can look identical, anyone can bump saturation.

Best cams in order:
1. AC 160
2. HPX
3. HVX

and then it really doesn't matter

hmc is lighter than hpx and hpx is way lighter than the hvx. I like the colors the hpx produces more than the hmc, but it’s pretty similar. but unless you want your clips to look like strobeck, I think there are way better options out there that are easier to work with

While it's harder to do 4:3 on the HMC via down convert out HDMI and you will not have the option to film to tape, the thing is you will be way more motivated to film with an HMC over an HVX or PX because it is so incredibly easy to film tons on 4$ SD cards and then move and store files much more easily. Ultimately the color depth and feel of HVX/PX/MC are very similar but doing color alterations in posts will be what really makes it look how you want. Also, do not listen to people saying HMCs are 2x the cost or whatever; do your due diligence and watch the eBay market for some time and you will be able to do what I did and buy a nearly new HMC for ~500$ also for the price of one 64gb P2 card you could get 1500+ gb of SD cards and a small book to keep them in and catalog them. Oh, and you get the updated CCD of the 200A without the hassle of waiting for a good listing.

Basically, unless you are really impatient and can't find a good HMC listing or you are nostalgic for P2: wait a while and watch the eBay market until you find an HMC150 for around 500$ spend the rest on a case, a real mic so you don't hear the loud ass zoom motors of the H series, and all the SD cards you could ever desire.

There is no best camera. Cameras are tools, different cameras for different jobs, different looks and different situations.

When most heads end up just uploading clips to insta..really not worth it to spend much more then a few hundred on a cam imo. Insta compresses the crap out of clips, unless you're uploading to youtube/insta, filming street low light etc.

Absolutely. Even in this group of very similar cameras, there are many many things to consider and multiple reasons for each.

Hot take: HVX with a fisheye is not great for filming skiing. People just want their edits to look like classic skateboard videos which HVX is great for, but skiers go a lot faster so you can't follow as close. At this point the look has been overused.

I've got a canon vixia g 30 and its very fun to film with. Has great zoom and a view finder. Can find them on Ebay for under $400

I believe that it’s actually most skiers just don’t know how to film with a fisheye

Responding to both of you... You can follow just as close. My fisheye is very wide and the perfect filming distance is about 3 feet or less away from the skier for me. That being said I agree they're not as good for skiing as they are skating but it's for different reasons. The main one being that ski features are way bigger than skate features generally. And those fisheyes really compliment a certain size of feature well. Fisheyes are great for small to medium stuff, but big shit just makes people look like dots on the horizon.

Also yeah most people film fisheye from 10 feet back with one finger in their butt and another swiping tik tok while they press record and wonder why it looks like dog water. Filming proper fisheye, especially in a line is a skill and can be pretty scary depending on what and how you're filming

Skill issue, gotta be 2 feet away and at knee level, if you're not putting your cam in danger while filming fish you are doing it wrong.

I believe with the HVX you have to use a specific software, I believe it’s an adobe one. But being with SD cards is it a different format to convert to then HVX? With an hmc do you need a specific software to convert?

Sounds like a lot of work lol

Basically start by emulating what you see other fisheye filmers do. And don't be afraid to get really close

HMC shoots AVCHD, you can drop it straight into your editing program.
