207I know you have some affiliation with NS and I honestly love your articles, I think you even worked with my old roommate back in the day at one point in the news section. That being said, do you REALLY think Newschoolers wants a bunch of random park riders demoing skis or do you think they're just too cheap to pay people to do it? Do you think they'd rather have you know someone like the former editor in chief of Powder Magazine demoing the skis or Newschoolers member john316534? Good to know John Smith from Newschoolers likes the 2024 Vishnu Wides!
I'd just like to see companies pay people for work. It's wack not to, and it's wack to look at it through mirrored rosy glasses "ohhh well they're getting a lift ticket and free lunch" its a fucking job that historically people have been paid to do that is now being outsourced for free and I'm the asshole for calling that out? Your labor is worth money. If they're really trying to hook people up why don't they just send me the skis for free and I'll demo them at Alta? Newschoolers is literally MAKING MONEY off this ski testing, it's not like this is some community event and you're volunteering to help out the community, they're literally making money as any business does off of this event through paid promotion by these ski companies. Oh did I mention that Newschoolers just sold for $28.5 million last fucking month?
Lmfao at the Bruce Oldham comment. That kid is actually the worse. Read my comments in here which conincidentally came moments after my rant in here if you think I'm on "the Bruce Oldham sorta grindset" https://www.newschoolers.com/forum/thread/933630/Social-Media-Skiers?utm_source=alert&utm_medium=web&utm_campaign=alerts#p-14502124
Long post so I guess I'll go point by point.
1.Not sure who your roommate was, might be true.
2. I think they absolutely do want park riders vs Jeff Johnson who has been skiing soul 7's for the past 6 years. It's a park-oriented website reviewing park-oriented skis. I hate going to look at a review of a pair of nearly symmetrical twin tips and the guy just goes on about how they don't turn well in giant slalom. I'd imagine companies probably love that the skis are getting used and reviewed based on what they are meant to do, by their target audience.
3. I can agree with the sentiment that you want people to get paid for work...but I just don't see how getting to ski new sticks that you didn't have to pay for, on a free lift ticket, with free food when we already all love skiing is really work. I'd get what you are saying if they were looking for people to travel all the time, cross country, and do this for 40 hours a week....but this isn't that. I've judged ski comps before. If I'm judging a 4 hour comp and get free food-great! If they expected me to do that every day for no pay then I'd probably be upset. Do you ask your friends for 20$ before you film them? What if they got a sponsorship from your filming?
4. NS doesn't make the money, the parent company does. If the community is cool with getting a hot dog, a lift ticket and some free skis to test what's the harm? Most people would pay for that experience lol. We gotta keep the lights on somehow and I think it's pretty shitty to make the assumption that any of the NS team wouldn't want to pay people more if they could.
Would you be willing to pay 10$ a month to use NS? 20$? I'd imagine we could do everything you want if we charged people 250$ for a yearly membership. So since we don't, It is absolutely a community thing because you use these forums, watch and host your edits, see reviews, have a marketplace that takes no cut, and some sick edits and events literally bankrolled by NS all for free. Being able to scrape by without charging YOU to use the website comes along with some things like paying people for a ski test in free skiing, hotdogs, and test skis. The people who are doing actual work consistently (not what is basically an 8-hour all-inclusive community event) do get paid.
5. I'm familiar with your takes on bruce. That's the meme.
I like NS. I got a lot of great things out of NS. If the parent company won't or can't shell out, I'm willing to give away some of my time here and there to help things along if I can. EVEN if I don't get paid because I've been able to use this site for 10 years at no charge.
All opinions are my own, I just get defensive of the site and team. Cool place and cool people
