Is social media unhealthy for skiing?

S.J.WAll social media is the same. It’s just new and you’re old so naturally you think it’s not worse than the social media you grew up with. NewSchoolers may be even more fake than tik tok because you can hide behind anonymity. How many shit threads are there with people giving advice they know nothing about. And in terms of the “fake” comments about social media. Photos have always been fake, back in the day when you use to have photo books of your trips and you’d show them to your friends/ family. You’d never show the shit photos, or tell them about the arguments you had on the holiday. All social media does is provide a means of show and tell for society. Society hasn’t changed one bit, technology has.

NS is skiing community while Tik-Tok is a manipulative, intrusive and highly addictive money making machine developed by China. They have little in common.

comparing social media to sharing your family vacation in your album is wack. all the followers and likes increases your dopamine and its addictive. and then you start to want to get more followers and it becomes a habit to the point where kids are unironically upset they didn't get any clips for their insta. and photo albums are much less fake, as your showing them to real people and most likely people who you know well and are friends and family, there's no "trends" or trying to impress them, it's just sharing what you did. yeah you're not going to show the picture where the kids weren't looking, but that doesn't make it "fake".i don't like insta but i can't hate on it because 1.) i'm not an OG in this community and haven't been around long enough to see a "change", and 2.) i use it

Yeah I get where you’re coming from. Social media really became popular when I was 13 or 14 give or take. And I’ve seen it evolve over the years. To me social media is very similar to what I remember at school and on the playground when I was younger. Kids would come in, some would lie about where they went on holidays, or what they got for Christmas. Same with parents at cricket or football matches. Vividly remember parents bragging about their child. Now give that exact same person Instagram, their need to feel accepted or brag is now done through social media, not on the playground or in social events, and is most definitely accelerated and highlighted through social media.

And I don’t really use social media that much, so my experience with it is vastly different to you, or other people who have grown up with it. So you guys can probably differentiate the difference in social media better than I can. But from my perspective, i think all social media is the same.

For me it's the 50 people posting pow picks on Snapchat from Jackson hole while I'm over here skiing on grass with some ice mixed in. "I'm going to try a flat spin on this jump but I have to jump to the right so I can avoid the big patch of dirt in the landing."

Some days watching instaclips gets me hyped asf to ski and learn new stuff,
otherdays it just makes me feel like a potato

hegleezyI don't know how to put it into words but you know when you see that Kid that went to windell's once with his copy and paste ass fit show up in your feed, Its the people like that and their over the top social media presence that just rub me the wrong way. Don't even get me started on TikTok. Am I just the pretentious asshole for thinking this? I see so many people doing the same thing that everything just seems less significant, but maybe I'm just tired of seeing people better than me.

Never seen anyone talk about this so I would love to hear some answers.

I think it’s good for exposure for the next generation, but I miss kids putting together a months worth of clips for an edit, when the through together a few shitty clips, put young boy over it and think like skis is gunna sponsor them

I just follow everybody on child labor cause the shit they post is raw and cool
