r00kie. How anyone will ever get into skiing when cost just to try it is this high is beyond me.

I dont get what the industry is thinking, I know the sport has grown the past few years, but if you aren't in the know or plan months ahead it's absurd how expensive it is. My home hill used to have a night season pass that was very affordable, got tons of people into skiing, including myself, that wouldn't have done it otherwise. Nothing like that now, still open at night but it's always empty, when weeknights used to be one of the busiest times. I don't see anyone that doesn't have skier parents becoming skiers in my area now.

Budgeting ski trips the other day and it’s going to be cheaper for me to fly to Chile and roadtrip through the Andes next summer than spending a week at Palisades this winter.

Then I saw that my one day at Palisades would cost more than my season at Bogus and will probably pass on this trip. i hear you 100%, lift ticket prices are so bad these days i don't even like thinking about it. but i would suggest trying palisades if you can swing it. reallllllllll badass place

My understanding was that ski corporations, like everyone nowadays, are pushing towards a more subscription-like model (in this case mega-passes). The steady, non-conditions dependent revenue is just too appealing. So, to get you to get a pass they are cranking up lift tickets to obscene levels.

Vail is probably the worst offender: a day ticket for Christmas eve, window rate is $275. A full Epic pass bought early is $859, which works out to 3.1 peak holiday rate days at Vail. It makes sense for virtually nobody, even Texans who only ski four or five days a year, to buy day tickets.

On the flip side, if you travel a few times a year, put 30+ days in, and get a mega-pass, they actually tend to work out to being exceptionally cheap per day. But I agree, its madness, feels like you either pick the Ikon cult or the Epic cult and you can't afford to leave to visit any other mountain.

Woodward properties have this for their indoor facilities but everything outside (skiing/biking) is all access passes, but I do see what he means.

Resorts around me used to do 4 or 8 hour day passes. Most people only ski for 4 hours anyway. I don't see things shifting this way tho, if they do it will probably be cheaper for most people

honestly, if you want to be a skier and you have any budget restriction at all, you should expect to buy a pass for your local resort(s) and basically only ski there (+ BC if you're into it). If you think you're going to travel to other mountains to ski places where you don't have a pass and NOT spend a lot of money, that's on you

Blue mountain PA also has timed tickets. They only work for a specific amount of time and some only work at specific times. The normal one lasts 8 hours and the mountain is open 8am-9pm or 9am-9pm on weekdays, so if you wanted to ski all day you'd have to buy 2 and then waste 4 of those hours because you bought 16 hours but the place is only open for 12.

Was hyped checking out the local back in NY. Everything is more expensive but they're trying to do right by people. Also the couple that bought the place in 2012 kind of do everything themselves. She runs the the restaurant, ski, school, etc, He does all the on hill stuff. Grooms, makes snow, fixes the lift. Idk, it's a pretty small spot but it's cool to see it still accessible for learning. Too many places are impossible. If you don't already ski you probably never will. Kinda sucks.

bogustThe ski mountain industry overall is shifting its mentality towards skiing being something you pay a lot of money to do a few times a year the same way mall trampoline parks or go kart facilities operate. quite a few places have even started exclusively selling part day session tickets where you need to buy two or three tickets if you want to ski a whole day. I wouldn't be surprised if we even start seeing season passes being phased out at some mountains in the coming years.

Epic and Ikon would love to move to a pass only product actually. you know how fuckin sick it is to get the majority of your money before you even open?? There is so much more financial stability in pass products. Day tickets are all speculation and subjective based on the condition especially for snowmaking, economic stability, PR things like chairlifts blowing off lines with guests on it etc. i would be extremely surprised to see anyone phase out season passes. I even think the outrageous day ticket prices are literally to push more guests to pass products. Breck will be $250 next week and they are even capping day sale tickets. They want you to get an epic/ikon pass. They want you to spread out the days you visit to be more mid week. They want you to subscribe to their pass products as you are less likely to spend your money elsewhere and also more likely to buy lessons, food, lodging, etc at their auxiliary outlets.

Wachusett's tickets are completely fucked its so fucking stupid. Used to run up and night ski since 4-10 was only $35 7/8 years ago now its like $90. Everyone I know has completely stopped going so I guess its down to locals and ritch assholes from Boston. Also the parks after moving from look mom to hitchcock started to suck comparably.

At first glance, maybe. But at places like my local mountain, they have blackout dates for passholders now (???), On all the major holidays. So it’s not that they’re trying to phase out day tickets, they’re trying to just maximize when/how they gouge every skiers wallet individually. It’s a bummer.
