Bear with me here, this is my first time making a repair like this. I recently scraped a hole into the bottom of both skis, to the point where you can see the comp layer but not the core. Would it be alright to use PTEX to patch these holes up? I’m not sure if it can be used for deeper grooves or for smaller base scrathes, any help would be much appreciated!
You can use it for a temporary repair until you can get them into a shop for a proper repair.
If you’ve gone through the base material full depth you need either epoxy to plug it before having ptex cover it or what’s called metal grip which a mix of p-tex and epoxy.
you can buy these things yourself and do it the DIY way but honestly a respectable shop ski service will do a much longer lasting repair and you’ll get any other shallower scratches dealt with aswell.
The best way I ever found to melt ptex was with the sun and a magnifying glass. Some of those are still holding strong. And let it cool for like a day before you flatten it out
But for real. Take it to a shop. Support a business that helps fellow shredders. And they will do a much much better job
Op, spend $40-50 on supplies (could probably get a cheaper soldering iron elsewhere) and never pay for a core shot again. I always take a repair kit with me whenever I go after learning the hard way since shops can charge at least that to repair core shots. Depending on the level of damage you might need to do more, but these three items and a razor blade can do wonders for most issues.
need pics cause it depends on how much base is exposed but I use epoxy when a lot of glass/core is exposed and p tex when little to no glass is exposed.
If using p tex, I hold the stick close enough that it kind of pours directly in. Flaming balls of napalm don't bind well with the base material due to the temperature difference. Try to heat the base a bit with an iron/soldering iron/waxing iron if you can.
When I epoxy I try to scuff the material it is bonding to for better adhesion.
If you still don't know what you're doing take your skis to a shop and try to get them to show you how it's done so you can do it yourself if need be.

No disrespect but the DIY epoxy repairs I have done have generally lasted longer and been more durable than professional shop repairs I've had done. The problem is if you want a base grind or other tuning services, a ski shop might not want to touch anything involving your epoxy job.
OP, I wouldn't just fill it with p-tex, either send it to a shop if you like you base grinds and sharp edges and such or fully commit and use a good epoxy.
If you're going the epoxy route, clean the damage, rough it up with a wire brush, and use the right type of epoxy: you are looking for something that is specifically made to bond thermosets, thermoplastics, and metal, that is what your skis are made of and that'll be the failure point if your epoxy peels off the ski.
What is the overall condition of the skis? If they're getting older and have other issues use them to learn how to diy repairs, if they're nearly new take 'em to a shop. Some shops charge by the inch and decent size repairs can get expensive fast.

Deciding to go this route, thank you so much for the links! I love my local ski shop but you’re saving me from shot cores and high prices simultaneously lol

epoxy will work & seal the area from moisture. but is harder to smooth out and be level with the other base area, unless you build a mound, then sand the epoxy.
P-tex is a little easier, just melt it in, and scrape it level. I'v had p-tex repair last years, tho some not, like not more than a weekend, so it is a bit of a gamble.
take it to the ski shop? fuk no, They'r going to charge you $50+ probably $80 tbh, but they will do a good ass job. i hope.... but u can go there and buy p-tex sticks... for like $3
