Here’s another stupid thread for ya

THE SKI YOURE ON DOESNT FUCKING MATTER

80% of skiing is ability, 19% is the type of ski you’re riding, and 1% is the ski’s design
Do you all really think Harlaut wouldn’t be good on Salomons, or volkls?
Everything you think about a ski is just based on marketing and you sheep can’t figure it out.
The only attributes of a ski that matter are underfoot, turn radius, and flexibility. Everything else is just bullshit.

I disagree, a ski will never make you more skilled but it can really seriously hold you back.

I do generally agree that most ski marketing is BS and skill > equipment generally, but your skis definitely still matter.

To take your example, yeah Henrik would still kill on any decent park ski, but I do think his pro model really does help him perform at 100% by catering to his style.

Underfoot width, turn radius and flexibility are some key parameters but so are length, flex profile, weight, swing weight, effective edge length, dampness/pop, and rocker profile/tip splay.

u right too, put any super pro on a shitty beat ass pair of skis and I guarantee they will still throw down

also like for the pros like 80% of their training is in the gym so take that as you will

You’re right about ability being most of it, but it all comes down to a preference.

They wouldn’t be making purposely bad skis, people buy them and use them, but some people don’t because of how they feel.

like I almost bought arvs, demoed them and hated them. Bought Jeff’s instead. Even though they had similar underfoot, they are a very different ski.

when you get into pure park skis that pros are using, there’s not much variety because they all need to be stiff, plain skis as that is a huge event and most don’t want something soft or crazy poppy to use.

I am sure you could pass any park ski to pros and they would throw down, but say Alex Hall might just like something a bit different you feel.

But put me on a pair of all mountain Salomon QSTs instead of jeffereys and I can bet you I won’t have as much fun as I would with jeffereys.

100% of someone’s skill comes from their ability and I would also argue that skis don’t actually play any role in someone’s ability to do any tricks.

But some skis are still definitely better than others and make it easier. Specially for rails and butters, but again if you’re good at those things you should be able to do them on any skis.

Your right, but also pretty wrong. Within categories of skis, different structures and construction will make them better at specific things. Of course a pro skier could hop on almost any pair of skis and throw down, but a pair of wets is not going to be optimal for big air, similarly as something like a poacher will take a lot more effort to do vishnu and 1000 stuff

they matter when your ski delaminates, snaps, binding screws strip, or your edges blow out. Higher quality = less problems.

Yeah nah I skied my friend Salomon nfx and my wets (similar length and width totally different shape)the same day skis affect a lot if your bag of tricks is we’ll spread

I think the brand marketing actually agrees with you given every brand has “freestyle inspired all mountain ski that helps turn the whole mountain into your playground and boost every side hit”

but yeah the subtle differences helps account for different styles and preferences, yeah most people aren’t good enough for it to matter but who cares let people have their individuality dude.

I've tried new skis and had revelations that they made some action easier whether it be skiing switch without catching an edge, maneuvering in powder or getting swaps around. There are other things that matter more but to say they don't matter seems absurd.

Basically it is the most important factor in how tight of a turn a ski naturally carves.

Within reason. you wont be able to ride park on a pair of 116 wide sticks like you can on some 86 wide ones.

It's the same with any sport/hobby. Lance Armstrong could beat 99% of people with a walmart bicycle. EVH could outshred 99% of people with a cheapo guitar. But it's what the user perceives to be different that matters. Could they? Yes. Would they want to? Not really. It's all preference.

This is true to an extent. I did my first 5 on carving skis hit up flat down rails, kinks, slippery tubes all on race skis. I think what your trying to say is the people that non stop complain and constantly make excuses are pathetic. You know the ones that say ughhh would have been way better if I have my DPS's instead of Black crows for the extra 2 underfoot. There's a lot to be said for getting good with what you got and at some point its time to upgrade though. Give Henrik some races skis and he'd trivia crack all of us in a SLVSH game still.

Skis matter like tools matter because that's all they are. You can turn any bolt with an adjustable wrench, but that's far from the best way and there are obvious downsides.

Also yes, some people who aren't very good at skiing are obsessive about gear, but that's in every activity. If they can afford to be that way, let them enjoy their thing. I consider myself a confident skier, far from the best but far from the worst and with a lot of experience. That being said, I really love gear/tuning/waxing/ski technology/etc. It's just another aspect to love about skiing for me.

Lastly I would encourage you to go try and rip some pow on true center, full camber pipe skis. In extreme examples, skis can actually prevent you from doing what you want. Most of the time though, it's splitting hairs. 181 vs 186, 100 underfoot vs 95, etc

If you have a local demo day, i'd definitely recommend trying a bunch of skis, especially ones which are similar on the face of it, on the same runs. I think you would be surprised at the differences.

As for pro skiers, sure they could likely throw the same tricks, ski the same lines etc on different skis but having a ski that works well for them gives them the confidence to push the sport and when the margins are fine on the trick/line working out, even if the ski design is only a 1% difference for them(i disagree that it is) then that can be the difference between pulling it off or not.

Do some people overly obsess over gear choices and the differences that could make on their skiing, sure. That comes down to confidence again though, that their gear choice has given them the best chance at skiing the best they can. You can overcome drawbacks in gear with determination and skill, and you could be doing that without knowing, but then getting onto the right gear can make what you're trying to achieve with your skiing that much easier.

The biggest ski companies in the industry love a gimmick technology/design piece, which among other reasons, helps the marketing people/shop sales staff have something of an easy point of difference to use to help sell skis, rather than fully understanding the design and being able to quickly describe how a ski would feel to ski on to each customer.

They do matter, though, mainly in the fun category. I'm gunna enjoy my day so much more on some playful pow/all mountain skis than I will on some basic volk/Salomon all mtn skis (just an example). Also will give me confidence and make me ski better.
