Should we use a song in edit that have been used before?

Few days ago I watched Nine club interview with Jamie Foy and guys picked up topic about music choice in videos. Is it "cool" or acceptable to re-use music from other edits in the same sport? What are your toughts?
Curious what skiers would have to say about that.

Haven`t tought about re-using song myself but just wanted to start discussion and hear what are NS opinions about it. I guess it also depends on song and video where it`s taken from.

To just steal a song you've heard in another video part is lame, you should put some effort into finding the music you're skiing too. IMO stealing a song from snowboarding is also lame, since they're very close. One thing that I have noticed though is nowadays some people just don't know that a song's been used before, since extreme sports and video parts have been around for a while now.

Using songs that have been used in other sports is a pretty common thing in skiing. Some would say it's an homage, sometimes it's straight up uninspired and copying. Cam Riley's part in Weight uses the same song as Heath Kirchart's part in This is Skateboarding. In this case it's well done, it's definitely an homage. Karl Fostvedt in All Damn Day, same intro song as Tom Penny/Arto Saari in Flip Sorry, also an homage. In those cases those were iconic skate video parts, so that's what makes it cool to reuse the song.

I'd say if you really like a certain edit, at least use a different song from the same artist. At least it shows some effort. Personnally, almost all the music/bands I listen to are from ski/skate/snowboard videos. I've stolen music from skate videos before to make edits, and I can think of one edit where it definitely was a great choice, the other ones I could've done better if I had listened to more music. This year I've put out a street video with my girlfriend, and both of our songs for our video parts are bands that I've discovered through video parts, and then I started to listen to albums from those bands and found songs that I really liked and used them for our video.

Nah don't use a song that you know has been used in a ski video. Wouldn't recommend stealing a song from a snowboard or skate video either. If it's a song that's been used in a reel, I personally wouldn't care. I think it's a good idea to run your song choices by a few people just so that they might be able to tell you if it's been used

Ruins the video for me if the song was in another video ive already seen. We actively try to avoid it when we are picking music for stuff. Asking around to a few people to see if they recognize it for anything. The Stand homies and CL homies even talk to each other during editing for their movies this year to make sure they didn't end up picking the same songs.

Oh man, back in high school, me and my punk ass friends found this lesson out the SUPER hard/ cringe way by putting Ghosts n Stuff Nero Remix (from Art of flight) over some terrible footy of us hitting a trash can… still makes me cringe so hard anytime I think back on it

I don’t mind if it’s an intentional reference to an old part you like and you have the skill to back it up, but most of the time using a song that was in a banger edit or part will instantly make your edit lame

This is why I watch so many edits both skiing and boarding. Not just for my enjoyment but it’s good to know what people are or aren’t using. Helps broaden your music taste and saves you from accidentally songjacking. Also why I try to use more obscure / lesser known music. Like if it’s an artist I’ve heard of I try not to use one of their top 5 songs listed on Spotify. As a filmer and editor one area I can grow in is song selection, making it more obscure, to where people haven’t even heard of the artist or whatever.

Commercial level ski movies: could attempt to not duplicate songs in edits, although it's gonna happen especially with the more popular songs in history. It's not like you get dibs on a random song lol. It's not your intellectual property. It's the musician's. "oh geeze Rick, we can't play lynyrd skynyrd cuz tgr used all their songs"

Random no name edits- literally a billion of these: who cares. They're gonna be duplicated eventually. As long as 90% of people aren't playing today's top hit in every edit, it's not really that big of a deal.

This is a stupid fucking debate. Like dumbbbbbbbbbbb. Are we really giving people shit about song choices because some other guy coincidentally used the same song that happens to be perfect for skiing? Hold up, lemme run this edit through my college plagiarism checker to make sure no one else used this Grammy winning song. I'm totally the first.... I put this in the same category as poles/no poles or over/under helmet goggles. Sheesh.

at the same time, there are some legendary ski movies that took songs from skate movies. I remember the first time I watched teddybear crisis I recognized a few songs from skate videos that came out around the same time. TBC still legendary as shit though

its fucking whack, that's why you should watch at least some skate/snow/ski videos so you don't accidentally don't use a song that's already been used. and if know that its been used and for some reason use it, you're kind of stealing someone else's idea, they found the song first and put in work to make it sick. its impossible to make a video that's gonna be remembered if you use a abd song, everyone will just think "where have I heard this song before?" instead of enjoying the video that you put hours into making. find your own songs and put some respect on the people that came before you

as we get deeper into the internet era there are going to be kids that don't understand, which is reasonable. but there used to be only so many parts out there and it was easy to know every song that had been used. the idea still stands, and i think it is possible to be aware of plenty of edits and parts.

just pick a few songs that you didn't discover from an edit. ask a few friends if they've heard them before. narrow it down to one. boom good to go.

The only songs I know that aren’t from edits is pretty much metal, screamo, hardcore stuff. Doesn’t fit with my skiing at all so I just use meme songs in my edits cuz at least it’s a little funny.

I get what ur saying but at the end of the day, if it’s not a serious segment and just like some video for whatever and you don’t wanna do the research then I don’t see an issue, but u also can’t blame kids these days for not knowing the song used in a CR Johnson segment from 04.

good questions actually. While most people agree about stealing songs from ski videos, songs from reels are debatable. If I've got something edited and then find out that a song was used in some random reel, I don't think I'd care. That being said, I personally wouldn't steal a song from a reel. I'd rather use a song that I've picked out myself.

Regarding snowboard and skate videos, I'd rather not use a song from a video that a bunch of people have watched. If someone told me a song was used in a strobeck video or a dustbox video I definitely wouldn't use it.

I had been editing a video for like 3 years with a particular song I had selected. Then about 6 months before I finished my video, a very well known pro released a video with the same song. At that point I realized I didn't give a shit because the video was for myself first and foremost. I didn't change it.

i agree about that for sure, the reason why I thought that one in particular was kinda sus is because the song is pretty unknown and it was used in one of the bigger skate vids of the last decade. song abds doesn’t necessarily matter in amateur vids, but if you are paid to make a vid of some of the best skiing out there,I think you should make an effort to find untouched gems.
