He literally filmed a damn near backcountry segment and hitting two rails like it’s just annoying for kids actually trying to make careers or names for themselves

hank.skiTanner got his first tour wildcard in 2019. He did...okay. it was enough to requalify for 2020, but if you watched all the stops, you'll recall that he has a few standout lines, but fell on the majority of his runs over the course of those 2 seasons.

Then he got hurt, and he took time off. In the meantime, the FWT handed wildcards to Max Palm and Max Hitzig. One of them landed the first ever double flip in FWT history, and then did it again. The other one put down one of the most impressive runs that Fieberbrunn has ever seen.

And this year, they threw Tanner another spot, because they know it will boost views. And I think it's kinda lame. We've seen the level of progression and innovation that new athletes are bringing to the tour. To me, it's much more refreshing and exciting to watch a young, unpredictable fireball than to see Tanner fighting for his 10th comeback career or whatever. And this isn't an insult to Tanner's skiing, he has unquestionably transformed our sport, and he reliably still throws down. I just think that if he really wants to prove himself, he should qualify for the tour in the FWQ circuit like almost everyone else, instead of punching the ticket that could have been used to bring a unique, unseen perspective to the tour.

I don't personally follow the FWT aggressively, I'll catch the highlight clips, but I'm not watching the live stream. However, I did watch several events live in 19/20 precisely because Tanner was competing and I wanted to see how he stacked up. So, if this is a marketing ploy, it worked on me. And for some reason, Durtschi's wildcard spot didn't motivate me the same way, I didn't care to watch.

And I totally understand what you're saying about opening up that spot to more young guns/talent that didn't qualify the traditional way, but I also think that's sorta the problem with my relationship with the FWT. It's hard to keep up with, there's not a ton of overlap between the skiers that impact my life, and the skiers on the tour, so I'm not watching. And it seems like a hard move to justify an established film skier, like many of the folks you mentioned, competing blind in variable snow just for whatever small bump they'd get from being in the FWT. Maybe I'm way off there, but it seems like a lot of risk and very little reward for most film skiers?

Anyhow, the FWT is sick, it's some of the rowdiest skiing you can watch, but somehow, for me at least, there's too much of a disconnect, it doesn't resonate with my experience as a skier, and it's not enough of an over-the-top spectacle to attract my attention either. But for some reason I can't fully articulate, I get way more hyped to watch Kings and Queens of Corbets, or a good video part than I ever do for the FWT. Maybe I'm broken?

I relate more to picking out the hardest line I could ride down a face, compared to meat bucking into Corbets. Although that is a fun watch too.

-they need better marketing for the athletes. They should be providing extensive interviews, hosting season edits, etc.

-they need to be less harsh about backslaps and butt touches, like Natural Selection.

-they need to livestream the qualifiers too.

-they need to land verbier on espn
