Does this affect the actual function of the binding or just the brakes

Sorta, as the heel realizes upwards it isn’t that big of a deal. I would still buy a new brake.

Yeah that’s a problem, your boot will probably wiggle around in the heel piece. since that black piece isn’t there anymore to keep it all flush and snug. Will definitely compromise the safety of your bindings.

I spent hours trying to muscle the spring back into the binding to no avail. good luck op, I bought new brakes...
