Waxing brand new skis

Just got a pair of brand new wets and I was wondering if I should wax them right away or not.

All skis come with a factory wax. Typically doesn’t last very long, so I’d recommend waxing them (assuming you have an iron at home).

Although you didn’t ask, definitely detune your edges if your hitting any rails this season.

I'd wax them for sure if you can't hot box. True it might be more psychological than anything but you can feel faster with a placebo

You might want to take a gummy stone to the tips and tails depending on what the factory tune looks like and the ski's intended purpose.

While most ski bases come with some type of base prep its not true for all brands. Vishnu for example switched away from sintered graphite bases this year for a harder base material that will need less tuning. Because of this Vishnu didnt do anything other than a standard grind and finish. So using something like swix's BP 88 or really almost any molybdenum base prep would probably be a good starting point to get the ski to hold wax better and repelle dirt. However BP isnt as nessassaraly as it was on the graphite bases. Your best option is to find out what your manufacturer did and what your bases are made out of and move from there.

You can never wax a ski too much. At the very least it's a good idea to do a hot scrape and get any dirt out of the base (depending on how long the ski has been on sales floor, stashed in a warehouse, etc. it's not that clean).

Was that the nazi guy? He really didn't know much about base tech honestly. Poorly done internet research and a lot of assumptions. Prob the same way he became an internet nazi guy


OP def wax your new skis. Even if they have a great wax job already, which they almost certainly won't, it won't hurt to wax them

I'm still alive! Just been busy, not like when I became MOTM! Ha ha!
Always clean the base well. Swix Glide Wax CLEANER (not remover) is my choice.
Use base prep. wax first. (Dominator Base Renew) is my choice. Do three cycles of cool, scrape and brush like crazy with steel and brass.
Then start working in harder waxes with cooling, scraping, and brushing as above.



I kinda go over the new ski waxing here.

Wdym hot box, I have some new skis and wondering if I can just do normal waxing or if I have to remove anything. Should I do something to the factory wax before?

Scrape/brush the bases like you normally would before waxing. That's it.

It's a heated box specially designed to heat up skis & boards over the course of 2-4 hours to allow wax to slowly absorb into the base material.
