Surfing Lake Tahoe

Has anyone here ever done this? I was gonna get a 6/5 hooded suit for it.

Sand harbor comes in sometimes but Kings Beach is the most consistent I've seen. But also lived in KB for years so I saw it more.

It's a little chaotic and pretty windy but I've sewn 6 footers come in to KB before. Also you can park right there at the beach along the road in town or some other spots. Most people ive ever seen out is like 10. Usually it's 2 or 3. You don't have to fight for waves though just try and get what you can.

Fall is pretty good for it. If it's windy the waves build fast. Generally 3' and under though. Gotta catch the right day for bigger. If you have a long board that helps.

Was just talking to a friend today about it. I never surfed Tahoe. Wetsuit and board are back east still. Damn it would be satisfying even to catch a couple shit waves.

It should be good when the wind is southerly >25 mph for several hours in the north bay based on what I've read.
Some of the videos I see on youtube look pretty fun for a small lake

Yeah whenever you get a big southernly wind event it gets pretty sweet up on the north shore.

I have had a fascination for sur ng Lake Tahoe for a while now. I have seen a ton of vids on it but this one easily captures some of the stoke and vibes the best. He even tucks into a little barrel. I had zero idea there was surfing on lake tahoe and its so cool that people are doing that. Props to you OP. Looks like some fun memories to be made.

It's small ish compared to the great lakes but its 22 miles long and 1,600 feet deep. So it gets some decent action. But yeah def windy if you're surfing.

Actually was just hanging out in KB the last few days. Nice seeing the peeps and wandering around the opd stomping grounds.

I was road tripping to California from my house, and I ran into Dylan Graves at the In and Out in Kingsman, Arizonia. I was actually psyched out of my mind and he was so rad and friendly. Even got a photo with him!

You can surf other places in CA though. Not like you'd be buying everything just to surf tahoe.


It's a 4 or 5 hour drive to different spots but people get in surf trips for sure.

This thread is definitely about surfing tahoe I just don't see very many people getting into it jist to surf tahoe. A lot of people in tahoe surf that don't even surf the lake.

You would never buy stuff just to surf Tahoe, there’s good surf a couple hours away. I drive 4-5hrs every weekend to ski surfers can do the same. I got good waves in my backyard but far from the mountains. Make your pick. It’s definitely a commitment and expensive just like skiing initially. Either way it’s a novelty wave but kinda stupid. If you find yourself there with a board sure if not don’t bother.

i haven’t been able to catch it at the right time yet and I only really know one guy who gets out consistently (like 3 times over the last 3 years) and every time I’ve asked him point blank, hey where’s the spot, he’s replied “north shore 🤙”

it seems like it has to be perfect conditions for it to be rideable and it doesn’t happen much, but honestly let me know if you find the spot/hear of good conditions coming up because I am not in the know.

Though I don’t surf in the lake, the drive to the ocean isn’t bad. Lately I’ve been trying to alternate riding and surfing weekends in the spring, weather depending. Any time I’m out on a surfboard I pretend like I’m Keanu reeves and just chill and it’s a great day so imo get the gear, you’ll use it one way or another.

You can park right at the recreation area in the middle of town in Kings Beach and go right in the center anywhere on kings beach. Some people surf closer to the pier at the one end, some down past whitecaps pizza even. If its on in that area you should be able to spot it. Can pull into the rec area and have a look around.

Sometimss its windy and there's waves but nothing worth surfing. Def some good sized stuff coming in sometimes though.

It shouldn't be hard to spot if its on.

Surfing update:

Epic winter also led to excellent surfing conditions. Had about 15 days surfing this past winter. Definitely need the warmest rubber midwinter. Most of the time it's not insanely cold, though.

The best day was with stomach-high sets at Kings Beach. Could hardly believe my eyes how consistent and clean it was. Pretty surreal to wade through to waist deep snow only to paddle out in a blizzard. Your eyelashes freeze together.

Overall, 100/10 experience. Would recommend to anyone that has experience in short-period conditions that has respect in the water.
