Professor-Modelohyped about this but i was curious about how many ppl actually have a record for simple cannabis posession with the feds. i didnt know the feds were even charging for that as i thought it would be a waste of time... when its done on the state level thats extra big tho
AndrewGravesSVI think its about time and fantastic. With how racially skewed policing and the court system is, this is a big step towards rectifying the historical disenfranchisement of minorities.
LippamaniWay to many big words bro

LonelyAlways curious about this take so I'm asking genuiley-if the general populace or the constituents want something, and the politicians/representatives do what they want or take a step in that direction, why is that a bad thing?
Doesn't it make sense that in an idealized representative democracy, when the representatives do what the people want, they gain more support because they are doing what they want, and get reelected if they continue to do what the people want?
Always confuses me the way things flip-flop between "fuck the government, they do not represent or do what we want" when they don't and then "fuck the government they just want my support" when they do something the people want.
"Wow, X company is making better products just because they want more people to buy their products. Fuck em"
Seems weird to me even though I have no love for the government or most public officials for that matter.
Professor-ModeloIt’s not a bad thing at all, there’s worse Shit to bitch about for sure… it just funny/disingenuous how Biden kiiiiinda didn’t really want to do this until the general population began to dislike him

eheathEverything has an agenda, pretty ignorant to say otherwise.
powpatrolSure does, but does that mean that the pardons are part of the democratic agenda or that they are using the pardons as a way to achieve their agenda. 🤔 I wonder.
powpatrolYep true, lots of people want this and have done for a long time. However the promised reforms aren’t proposed because of the care and respect the administration have of those currently incarcerated for cannabis ‘crimes’ but rather for winning votes, which is all that matters in the end, from voters who may not have otherwise voted for them. As Meathead says below you, everything has an agenda, which the administration are obviously hoping to further and if that means promising a cannabis reform then they will do so.
FYI: I don’t dislike the idea of the reform but the timing is the problem, people currently in jail or facing jail time for cannabis aren’t who the administration are caring about. It’s you and your vote.
LonelyRight, and I agree that they don't care about the people that this is helping, or care enough to reach their ends.
But that's how most things function in all of life. Very few things done by anyone are virtuous or in service of another.
I don't necessarily work my job because I have a deep love for my company and want to make sure that my CEO is well off. I really don't care about that. I work my job to get a paycheck.
In the inverse, my company doesn't pay me because they are very concerned about my well-being. They pay me so they can make more money.
So for me when someone says "They're doing it for votes >:(" I kinda just think... well yeah no shit...that's how pretty much all aspects of life outside of friends or family operates. Seems like a pointless point to make from my perspective. Everyone is chasing one incentive or another.

eheathmy only point is every political ever has done something to try and get people to like them more, you only win an election if people vote for you, I honestly hate how politics as turned into a "contest" rather than achieving the goals of the people.
T0AST.I think people may be worried about it being nothing more than a pandering gesture instead of an actual step towards legalization. It's kinda like a business throwin a pizza party for moral instead of addressing the deep underlying issues the workforce experiences.
Jemsit’s really comical that populism has brought us candidates as bad as trump and biden when it should do the opposite
LonelyWhat?
CaseyI looked it up and the pardon will only apply to about 6500 people- which is like yeah probably pretty rare circumstances on whole that people get federal possession charges. But calling on the congress to reschedule the drug as well as the states to follow suit is pretty much the edge of presidential authority. If he starts dictating to red states what they can and can’t do on this it’s going to start a shitstorm of a political fight and probably backfire. And again he needs the congress to pass a bill for any real change to happen.
Heres my biggest personal gripe: commercial drivers licenses require random drug screening. I had one for years and the health screening is pretty thorough. If your BP is too high you can’t renew, if you are diabetic you can’t, if you test positive for any drugs you’re toast. Okay fine fair enough no one should be stoned driving a semi truck. But people getting fired for smoking weed 2 Saturdays ago is ridiculous. Also since it’s schedule 1 someone who uses marijuana by doctors prescription cannot use that to excuse a positive drug test- it’s not even a mitigating factor.
Ling story short It’s gotta go one way or another- this business of local and state being out of step with the feds is stupid for a lot of reasons besides this.
SuspiciousFishFrom what I understand, since DEA is under direct federal authority it is well within presidential power to remove weed from Schedule 1. We will see if Biden actually makes a difference here, if not its just politics for mid terms. Each state can have its own laws but moving weed from the Schedule 1 will make it much easier for dispensaries etc to operate.
That and Kamala Harris grandstanding this when she locked up thousands of people for weed in CA is some epic hypocrisy.
