Thoughts on this base grind?

I mostly wanted to freshen up the base and expose fresh plastic. Decided to set side edge too. Their website says they set at 1 base, 2 edge. I asked if they could do a 1/1 tune and they said they could.

This is the end result. I’ve used base grinders that you operate by hand, never the automatic ones. So I can’t speak on that but I’m still thinking this doesn’t look right. What are your thoughts? I wouldn’t have paid $60 if I knew this was the result. Also, the edger looks like it skipped somewhere on the right ski. The edge I’m not so worried about. I can fix it myself but it just seems to be indicative of poor work.

Thoughts?




* actually I’ve used the automatic machines, just don’t remember the result. I imagine I would notice if it was like this

Yeah looks like your base was not flat at all to begin with. If they had gone further it would look better but remove way more material so really it depends which you think is better.

What skis are these? Looks like a base flatness issue. I know sometimes smaller, newer manufacturers suffer from this. Did they used to be flat? If you have core/sidewall damage maybe they warped?

FWIW a standard base thickness is like 1.2-1.4mm and the manufacturer likely shaved some additional thickness off as well when they flattened the bases from the factory. Your edges are probably 2-2.2mm tall for reference.

I prioritize durability over base flatness and edge sharpness so I'd personally leave it but if you are the other way around you should be able to work it down until its flat. If it is warping over time from damage, for instance water contamination into the core freezing from damage, I wouldn't bother.

The shop needed to belt this ski/ skis flatter before they passed it over the stone. Using the stone to get a ski flat takes far too long in my experience. maybe the robots/ automatic machines do it faster, but there is a reason you start with running the ski over the belt:

-remove old/“dead” ptex quickly
-remove old structure from last base grind
-get the bases flat
-and it helps remove rust from base edges to make setting the edge an easier process

Is the shop otherwise any good? I feel like most ski shops don't know wtf they're doing most of the time.

Update: I emailed the shop and, after some back and forth, they agreed to let me come in and they would fix it at no cost.
