The goal is to get people to stay at the resort, basically all vail owned/operated places give free parking to anyone who has a room.

so if people are coming to stay for a few days and they find a non-vail run hotel for $400-500 less it ends up being basically the same as if you just stayed somewhere at Stowe Resort but more convenient.

yes it’s about the money here.

Where does this happen? Do you mean free parking at the skier lots or free parking at the hotel/condo lots? In my experience with lodging operations, parking is dependant on the property; And whether you book through Vail Resorts or elsewhere (ie. VRBO) is irrelevant, the parking policy is the same. Lots are usually owned by the building's HOA or the town.

i dont really agree with paid parking, or some wack parking pass, but at this point its not just Vail charging for parking. This was inevitable at all large resorts and has existed at large resorts already, but the insane growth from covid has pushed us into the future 10+ years.

Free parking at the place you stay, then you get free shuttles to the base. As I said they want you to have to stay with them as opposed to going elsewhere then just driving up.

On top of that a lot of the vail owned lodging is actually owned by some third party so is essentially an investment property for someone so it’s on vail to protect the demand for that investment.

So if they can’t really beat smaller further away competitors on price they can effectively raise the overall cost of choosing their competitors.

Yeah it doesn’t matter who they book through as long as they are staying at vail operated property. And yes everyone that stays there can use the shuttle to get to and from there.

again, they don’t care who you book through so long as you are at one of their properties. Then you can park your car at the lodge and a shuttle service will pick you up and take you wherever inside the resort. Other people can use the shuttle but they won’t take you to a hotel that isn’t a part of them.

in conclusion if you stay somewhere that is NOT VAIL OPERATED you would be forced to drive your car there and find/pay for parking. But if you stay at a vail operated location you just park your car and forget it until you leave the resort area.

I haven't had an epic pass in 5 years. Every terrible thing Vail has done you have defended on this forum.

None of the hills on my pass charge for parking. They would go out of business if they pulled that shit in New Hampshire. Sorry you don't have other options and good places to support that aren't on the Ikon or Epic enjoy those crowds this winter.

I don't like locals because they never ski unless its a pow day and then their instagram look at me ass has to be out there to post about waiting for first chair. Of course these folks don't work and were born with their hand in someones pocket so can always make it out for a Wednesday dump. They'll brag about how they don't ski on weekends to avoid the crowds and shit. 'OK dude cool I got no problem doing a 2 hour day trip on a Saturday and waiting a couple mins a few runs that sounds really core not skiing where you live on a weekend.'

I don't ski western lower 48 if I live New England I'll go to Inner BC, Alaska, or the Alps. Go back to telling people how paid parking is a good thing and Utah needs a gondola or to charge exorbitant tolls.

I had some great times at all the Vail resorts 5-15 years ago.

I mean like yeah this sucks for the average recreational skier but this really fucks-over resort workers and employees if they don't have an option to park off-site. Given the standard that resorts now will be understaffed, I am willing to bet resorts aren't going to provide shuttles or transit options for people who work at the resorts or businesses/organizations affiliated with them. As a coach, $25/day is taking a lot of your paycheck each month. Sure, its easy to say "ooooOOOooo just carpool everyday" but thats just not realistic with peoples schedules differing. Not every VR property is blessed to have taxpayer-funded transit systems, but maybe all do, IDK, but at least in my town, we have bussing as an option.

Ahhh what fuckin choir am I preaching too at this point. Its the ski industry.

It's very much true.

They do not act as the sole property manager, they do not act as the HOA either (they may get a vote if they own units or other property in the building). They do not retain rights/powers beyond having contracts with the actual HOAs or owners, unless they also own the property.

They act as "a" property manager with a front desk staff and housekeepers in house. If the actual owner of a unit rented though any other booking platform Vail Resorts does not get any of that money. Vail Resorts' front desk staff do not assist the guests, Vail Resorts' housekeepers do not clean the rooms.

The people who own those units are free to have their property managed by anyone or no one.

You claimed they offer free parking for people who book through Vail Resorts. Anecdotally the 2 main hotels at my resort base both charge for parking, and rooms can be booked directly through Vail Resorts, the front desk is staffed by Vail Resorts employees, but booking directly through them doesn't waive any parking charges.

Fuck Vail, obviously, but i think you're off base on the parking situation for lodging. Vail cares about 1 thing: Selling epic passes during the off season; They dgaf about your experience once you arrive.

I’m Stoweked to see all the failures this year. Traffic will still be an issue, the parking is already a confusing mess. It’ll be interesting to see how this will effect Sugarbush. Since everyone switched the ikon, I predict Bush will be overcrowded and the traffic / parking issues will just move west off exit 10 this season.

For instance I’m 99% sure that Snoqualmie is doing that this year, and the AUDACITY of them to do that… what a joke.

And I bet they’re going to be veiling it by saying it’s to fund the re-paving job they did on the lot this year. Clowns.

Bullshit. PCMR, my local mountain is implementing paid parking this season where you have to pay $25 per day unless you carpool with 4 people. Free parking for people who carpool is nice but 4 people seems like a lot and $25 per day is way too greedy. Classic vail
