Europe Ski Trip Destinations

Hey NS,

Planning a trip for Jan 2 to Jan 10 either in France, Switzerland or Austria. We are looking for a place that has a decent chance of having powder but is also not very popular as this is probably the busiest week of the year and I do not feel like 1 hour chairlift queues. Any ideas?

Went to Chamonix last spring, highly recommend. Never waited in a lift line the entire week.

I agree with @tvonny, Chamonix is super fun. La Clusaz is fun too. Working on planning a trip myself. Looking at St. Anton in Austria at the moment but havent committed to anything yet.

Can heavily vouch for St Anton, the access to free ride zones is amazing, huge area and dank ass kebab shop in town

If in Austria - just go to Tyrol - Innsbruck area. There`s like hundreds of sick resorts everywhere and it covers every aspect of skiing you can imagine. Plus Innsbruck is a great party area, with a lot of friendly, helpful and likeminded people. Depending on how long you go, you can get so called Tyrol Pass. Which costs I think 900Euro. With this you have acces to all those 100 or so resorts in Tyrol area, where usual price of a day pass is 50E. Main spots for Tyrol pass would be: Mayrhofen, Nordkette, Patcherkoffel - park.. Engelberg Switzerland can get hammered and the terrain is all time. Can't vouch for the line situation though since it's fairly close to Zurich and a big destination.

It won’t be that busy at that time of year. February half term and Easter tend to be busier than Xmas and new year. What sort of skiing are you looking to do

Have a look at Davos / Saas Fee or Tignes / Val ……..for Swiss / French

Verbier for big off piste stuff for Switzerland. 3 valleys in France for just pure amount of area. To be fair there are so many great places to go. I wouldn’t look to travel to different areas just chose one of the large interlinked places and explore. Remember there are no rules for off piste either - you can pretty much do what you want over here. If you give some idea of what you’re looking to ski and your level you’ll get better direction

+1 For Tignes/Val as a ski area and place to hang out, loved my season there.

Looking for a powder/off piste mainly but since you cant predict the weather i'd like to go to a place that has a decent park (beginner-intermidiate park) in case we get no fresh snow. Mainly I do not want to be stuck skiing piste for 7 days if there is no powder.

Unless it's a shitty season, I would scratch Saas-Fee. No park to speak of last year and super sketch glacier after the hot summer. Still fun but there are better resorts. Zermatt is probably my pick of Switzerland resort wise, or Adelboden/Laax for pure park in recent seasons.

Kitzsteinhorn is awesome for some park plus backcountry jump terrain, Tignes is a ton of fun for that too. And of course, Dan is spot on the money about the Tirol pass. Probably the best variety of skiing in one area on the planet.
