What made you decide that you actually liked skiing?

For me, it was my first day skiing after getting off the bunny slope and going onto my first green. I remember being scared as fuck because it was so icy and "steep" but once I got to the bottom I was so stoked that I wanted to do it again. And that cycle repeated all day. Bought skis for the next season after that since it was late spring. Haven't looked back since.

Just curious as to why you guys liked skiing initially and why you continue to do it.

I think it was seeing Teddy Bear Crisis on a VHS TV in the ski shop of my local hill in MI one night as a kid cuz I remember the big teddy bear they would throw around. I was like "oh fuck so you don't have to bash gates????". Only because my sisters raced for the local school programs.

Definitely first day on skis. I had snowplowed my way down the bunny hill a couple time and hadn't fallen yet, so my dad decided to go up the chair w/ me. This was at Mt. Seymour in Vancouver and this particular green started off way steeper than the bunny hill and I didn't really know how to turn yet so I just snowplowed as hard as I could down what felt like sheer ice. I remembered being so stoked on skiing after that, and felt like I could hit any run.

I still pizza straight down the mountain most of the time

It was my 1st day alone skiing without my parents when I was 9. My mom had broken her leg and my dad was left to deal with my younger siblings.

My pops gave me 30 bucks for food etc and away my little ass went. I had never known such freedom. I could do whatever my little heart desired skiing wise. I didn't have to wait for anyone or be told "that's too hard for you". I remember feeling so cool buying my own lunch alone at the lodge etc. No cell phones only mom telling me to be at the base no later than 4 or they will call ski patrol. It was seriously one of the best weeks of my childhood.

First impressions are everything. The first time I went skiing I had proper instruction and good snow conditions so I felt comfortable and was able to thoroughly enjoy my experience. That's why I fell in love with it. I feel a lot of people get turned away from skiing because their first time going it was cold af or their friends send them tumbling down a black diamond seconds after they click into their bindings for the first time

I’ve always liked sled riding and making jumps and hitting them. So naturally my first day ever skiing solidified it. I still remember the date and the whole day so vividly even tho I was only 7. I just remembered liking the freedom, going fast when I was cruising greens by the end of the day. Bluebird day after some fresh snow so the nature aspect def drew me in big time. I remember being super interested by the snowguns that were running too. Best and most important part about it was that I got to do it with my dad.

That day is just as monumental as the day I first slid a whole rail when I was like 11 and this pretty cute girl I went to school with was watching as she was skiing by.

Lil me was on top of the world after that one lol.

Been skiing longer than I can remember anything but I do remember being like 6 or 7 and finally making it down a 2 mile run at Sunlight and that was kinda like when I unlocked the drive to always try to get better at it

I used to do a lot of tricks on the trampoline and also build jumps for the bike so i liked those kinds of sports where you could jump and do tricks and my father took me skiing and i saw people doing tricks on skis and snowboard and i thought it was the coolest.

I didn't have much choice when I started at 2 years. I think maybe around 6 I realized I was having fun when I could ski black diamonds.

Discovered park skiing on youtube at the end of the season and didn’t get to learn any tricks.

Spend the whole summer thinking about skiing and slid a box on the first day back. Still chasing that same feeling.

Lived in MN but didn't play hockey so my mom signed me up for ski lessons at Hyland when I was like 8 or 9. For those that don't know, Hylands old chalet and even the new one both have stairs leading up to the entrance and the first thing you see is a picture perfect view of the terrain parks. When I showed up to get my rentals and do my first lesson I saw some skiers hot lapping the park and was like "Daaaaamnnnn I didn't know you could do tricks on skis like that?!" and just like that it was all I wanted to do.

Then I tried to ski a blue and went through a fence lol. But as soon as I learned to turn and stop I immediately began to start sliding boxes and straight airing jumps, tow rope took me a bit of time and a few pairs of gloves to master though.

I can't remember one particular moment, it just always was. But then again I was fortunate enough to begin skiing at an incredibly young age. To be honest I barely remember anything before the age of 10

Being 10 and able to roam our local hill with friends without parents following around was pretty sweet. Then started trying park stuff which was super fun.

I remember I was like 12 years old and I was new to skiing but really into hockey and slowly developing a passion for skiing. I was really fucking passionate about hockey tho, my whole life revolved around it. I tried out for the rep team for my age and I played like shit and didn’t make the cut which hurt me pretty hard at the time but I knew I had a backup plan. I didn’t say a word to my parents on the way home, walked into my basement, strapped on my boots and skis outside on the grass and started practicing 180’s on flat. That year, I slid my first rail and learned 360’s and had so much fun. I was still debating if I wanted to try snowboarding at the time but I watched BDog’s “resurrection” edit and I thought skiing was just cooler imo so I stuck with it.


I still played hockey until 2014 I got salomon suspects (my first real park skis) and I met a homie on my hockey team who also skied. We had so much god damn fun that year he quit hockey mid szn and my parents made me finish but that was my last year as well. Hockey was a chore but skiing was free and I knew I wanted to do it for the rest of my life.

When I was like 3 and my lesson group wanted to go in for coca and an indoor game but I made one of the instructors stay out with just me cause I wanted to keep skiing - ever since I can’t get enough of it

Loved it since my first day first run. Just all the possibilities with skiing are so much fun and going with friends and family…

I snowboarded forever until I realized it was largely dominated by degenerate bums and an alarmingly consistent interest with those who sought to imitate urban youths. I switched to skiing to align myself with the more tactful and civilized European sport of old.

Took some ski lessons at Panorama when I was 5 and loved it as soon as I was good enough to get around ski most blue runs and some blacks. Felt very freeing and relaxing, even if some of the harder runs made me shit my pants at the time.

I hated, hated, skiing with poles for some reason though. My brother
loves to talk about how I would try to pole plant, somehow get my
arm/pole stuck in place, and spin around it before crashing. Funny cause
I hate going no poles now.

I loved park skiing after watching all of the new ski movies from 08-09, and going to COC that summer where I slid my first rail after some tips from Nick Martini and Sean Jordan (who was only a few years older than I was), and got to meet Tom Wallisch.

The first time I went skiing I was 4 years old. My mom took me along with her and the ski club she drove for(school ski club as my older siblings were involved) night skiing. She took the time to teach me the basics on the bunny hill and allow me to slide on by myself as I gained confidence. After a few laps I specifically remember telling her, I was ready for the big hill! She laughed as we grabbed ahold of the rope tow to go for another lap. She said, if you can make it all the way down making your turns and stopping when I tell you to, we will go up on the big hill. Well I did it and away we went up on the chairlift for the first time. I was so excited! They slowed the chair down, helped me up on and away that old double chair went...creek, creek, creek. I still remember that sound.lol We rode to midway station and with a little help from mom again, I made it off. I slid that big mountain all by my damn self, granted it wasnt super steep but I did it. My mom was amazed when we made it to the bottom as she thought I would be done but nope...another lap is what I wanted. I did 4 big mountain runs that night all by myself. We made it back to the bus later as it was closing time. She poured me a cup of hot chocolate out of her thermos and I surely remember sitting there sipping hot coco, looking out across the dimly lit ski runs thinking, I love this!
I have strayed away from skiing through the years but I have always found myself coming back to it. I found NS a few years back and it has given it a whole new spice. Thanks to all of you for making it great and a special thanks to mom for giving me this opportunity. I will always cherish this memory.

The first time I ever rode a pair of skis which I believe was my sophomore year of college

I grew up pretty lower/middle class, and we couldn't really afford it but was I super into action sports so my parents would usually buy me one ski ticket (shoutout Shawnee Peak) to go snowboarding each year as a Christmas present. Once I got to high school they bought me my own snowboard and I'd probably go probably 2-3 times a year with my friends. They were all racers or grew up skiing so I could never keep up and never felt super comfortable on a snowboard. Being a skater kid, I had friends that were into park skiing and I knew what Newschoolers was, but as very casual snowboarder, I never really felt like I could claim it or actually post on my own. (I deff miss Yobeat tho haha)

My sophomore year of college I went on a ski trip and didn't have my snowboard so I rode my friends extra pair of skis and was immediately better and way more comfortable than I ever was snowboarding. I grew up playing hockey a bunch too which I really think helped with the edge control. Traded in my snowboard for skis the next winter, started watching Poor Boyz and Stept and Level 1 and have been skiing ever since.

The first time I clicked in was the first time my prostate jiggled, I knew then and there

Skiing gave me a sense of freedom yet connection to nature with a side of adrenaline, peaceful yet dangerous and worry free all in one, was a no brainer

Went skiing for the first time with my brother and my two cousins when I was 5 up at Lutsen or Giants Ridge in MN. I don't remember which lol. What I do remember is feeling like I picked it up fairly quickly and was able to snowplow around and control myself sort of. Basically from then on I couldn't let it go. I would write school stories on skiing or make my art projects about it (that's basically what I still do now LOL). I finally got my own skis in 6th grade along with a Saturday pass to my local hill. Basically from then on it was absolutely on. Got twin tips a year or two after, along with a full season pass and anytime I could get a ride there I would go ski. I still feel the same way about skiing and it's been 23 years now since I started.

This also brings a funny memory, on my 4 day of skiing I had to check out the progression park . Hit my first small jump and crashed in the landing. The guy teaching me advised against it but I went anyway. When I got better I kept hitting those two small jumps in a row on my race skis.
I got twin tips the next season and thats when I Really Liked skiing.

Learned how to ski with my friend when we were like 4 or 5 and we'd race each other down the beginner run. I doubt we were even going fast at all, probably snowplowing. But it was fun friendly competition and I've enjoyed skiing ever since.

First started enjoying park skiing when my friends got into it and started hitting rails. Not wanting to be left behind in terms of park progression, I started going outside my comfort zone and falling more. Been an avid park skier ever since

the fact that i literally felt said and couldn't stop thinking about the skiing. like being annoyingly twitchy to my parents so i could get to ski again lol.

I made the transition to snowboarding at 10 and then was kind of half-in half-out skiing. The big moment when the lights turned back on was probably a family trip to Copper when I realized I was finally a better skier than snowboarder. Both park and all mountain. I started hitting rails and doing spins and it was game over. All on my 158 Line Mike Nicks.

I skied a little bit when I was really young then moved over to being terrible at snowboarding when I was 10, we weren't big on skiing aside from my uncles so I'd only get two or three days on the hill per season. I probably would have given up entirely on both entirely if not for getting to demo 1080s at Cranmore when I was 14.

That's when it clicked, I'd started getting into blading with homies at school the previous summer so the muscle memory was right there from the start; after our first lap my uncle could see he didn't need to keep an eye on me and me and my cousin were cut loose for the day. That freedom to just go off and maybe link up later was the best time I had on the mountain yet. Cousin and I spent the whole day trying to throw spins off sidehits and bombing trails. I thought my cousin was the best skiier in the world when I was a kid so when we were on the lift and he actually complimented MY skiing for the first time that wasn't just encouragement to try again it meant everything to me.

When I realized after a day of skiing I don't feel like I've been run over by a truck compared to snowboarding. I wasn't horrible at it and falling all over the place, but all that twisting and bending over at the hips to stay balanced on a snowboard was starting to suck for my neck and lower back as I got in to my late 20s. Skiing just leaves me with tired legs at the end of the day like I did a bunch of squats.

Visually though, Nick Mcnutt's Almost Ablaze segment below is what got me to try skiing in the first place.

Snowboarding hurt your back/hips more than skiing? Opposite for me …..was it falling or the twisting? I feel I move my hips around my core waaay more skiing than boarding, but ima shitty boarder

It wasn't until I'd actually been skiing 2 years or so, I kinda liked it, but it wasn't my main passion in life, and I wasn't really aware of freeskiing, since my home mountain doesn't ever really set up a park, then in summer 2020 I watched the saas fee edit by faction, which I know looking back isn't the greatest edit of all time, but I saw it and thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen, and at that moment I knew that was what I wanted to do. I started to learn park that winter and haven't looked back since. I absolutely fucking love this sport and everything it's brought into my life.

Saw what must’ve been like a Real Ski segment or something on X Games one morning in jail, I had Wu playing in headphones and was like damn that’s dope I never seen skiing like that, told myself I’d try it when I got out. First time couple times down the bunny slope I knew I had problem. Sick cause skiing wasn’t really a thing for us when I grew up

Tldr: snow is why. Always loved it and this was the pinnacle of ways to experience it. NS accelerated my obsession.

Love at first slide...literally. First day, I was about 10, and at Peek n Peak. Skipped the snowplow they tried to teach us in our garbage ass lesson and went straight to the skid turns (thanks Dad). Then because pknpk is so easy we jumped on the lifts and "skied" on all the other trails-only time I've ever skied without a pass (ours was beginner area only). This was before they had a terrain park worth noting and I felt like a bad ass after skiing down the black diamond (lol) under the lift with all my buddies who were also on their first ski trip. As small as pknpk is, it seemed massive as a kid, especially since I'd never even seen slopes that high before lol.

What sealed the deal was the fact that skiing is basically sledding on steroids. I was already one of those kids who would spend their entire winter outside in the snow and I loved sledding. Skiing combined the two with an extra level up in adrenaline. Been obsessed ever since.

This is gon a sound really cheesy but I watched this YouTube series with Bobby Brown and it really increased my interest in skiing even more. Bought first skis and boots like a total noob and started trying to go places beyond WNY... WNY seemed like the shit til I took a trip to VT when I was in college. "fuck these are mountains" and WNY resorts became a glorified sledding hill after that, even though I still enjoy them. Also got a 2' dump in VT first day so that was insane to experience for the first time. Then first time out west, went to targhee and got dumped on. Fuck yes and no lines. Then started trying different mountains every year and every trip I'm always surprised at how each place is more insane than another or has sick vibes. The mountains keep getting bigger. Always have a good time and love checking out new places. NS accelerated my obsession and also helped me push my limits each year; as a self taught skier, I feel pretty good about where I'm at.

Skiing is always a happy place. No time for bad vibes which is probably why I like it so much.
