Looks like Japan is finally going to be allowing tourists back in this fall after the 2+ year Covid Restrictions! About to book my first trip there. Anyone else hyped??

either this year or next winter. went in 2020 right before covid and it was the best trip of my life

Def gonna send once it's fully open. Not taking anything as given though as we've heard "it'll be open to tourists by x date" constantly for the last 2 years. A winter spike in covid is almost a given, I can totally see them scrapping reopening plans.

where you riding? hokkaido is much more reliable for pow than anywhere on honshu. we went at the same time as you are and it was bone dry in hakuba. then we flew up to sapporo and skied deep pow at rusutsu for a week.

and I've experienced the opposite. it was aight in Niseko, but definitely low tide, and tits deep multiple days in Hakuba (2nd half of January 2017).
The terrain is vastly different. Hakuba has serious pitch. Niseko is best for mini golf.
122 is perfect with a touring binding if you can consistently figure out how to safely access backcountry.

Furano, Rusutsu, and Niseko. Hakuba region is a maybe.

Wecome to Japan.
I am Japanese Freeride skier live in Shiga(near by Kyoto).
This season we probably get a lot of snow coz　El Nino phenomenon occurred.
I think only 120mm ski isnt a good idea.
I recommend you add 100mm ski.

If someone come Hakuba or around ,lets skiing together.

fo sho. it just felt like different environments to me. hokkaido felt further north and more 'solid' in terms of winter weather.

i rode a 116 width ski the whole time and had a blast on both islands.

I'm headed down early February. It's looking like a week of touring on Hokkaido, then a week inbounds somewhere. Probably based at either Hakuba or Rusutsu since I've got an Epic Pass.

Anyone got hostel/affordable hotel recommendations for either? I'll probably be solo for the second week, so somewhere where it's easy to meet people would be great. I'm leaning towards Phatpackers Hostel in Hakuba or YOUTEI Hostel in Rusutsu. Rusutsu Grand Cabin would be another option, but it means taking a shuttle to the ski hill instead of being right there.
