eddiej4.7Probably try to rent somewhere on the north shore is your best option cause then you don’t have to drive over the bridge to get to the hill. Also if you don’t already have a pass, grouse is on early bird sale rn.
BLandzIm used to driving an hour to get to the hill. Even 1.5 hours to me is pretty reasonable distance to a mountain. My main priority is getting the best distance to cost ratio and I wont be moving until next year so i’ll be skiing Ontario this winter. Thanks for the advice tho I want all the info I can get regarding cost of living out there etc. before I move
skiP.E.I.I'd say you'd want to be making at least $60k a year to be living out there with much comfort.

BLandzOkay thats prime i’ll just live in moderate discomfort for 4 years til I get my red seal then i’ll be ballin thanks for the response
mystery3What kind of rent are you accustomed to paying now? I agree with others that mentiond north van, particularly lower Lonsdale close to the train tracks/ship yards/port facility gets less expensive. There are some light industrial sites around that area as well so there may be work close by. What type of machine shop stuff are you looking to get into?

timdrachanwhere about in ontario u rippin?
BLandzLive in Sault Ste Marie, ski searchmont
BLandzIm paying $750 for rent rn making $20 an hour with zero financial issues at all. Im good with managing money. And I just finished the 2 year ontario mechanical program and I started a machinist apprenticeship but I would be down to get a millwright job instead if possible as I have plenty of hours doing both machinist and millwright work
mystery3Looking at CL it looks like rooms in shared housing in north van are $900-1200, and studios and small basement suites etc are $1300+ that said it should be pretty easy to do better than $20/hour with a skill set of any kind.
Transit and bicycle infrastructure are pretty good so depending on your situation and proximity of housing to work it may be possible to go without a car. As stated earlier you can get to Grouse on the city bus. Cypress bus is a dedicated shuttle and much more costly.
BLandzSo next year I plan on moving to somewhere around the Vancouver area and im wondering where the best living locations are to be relatively close to the ski hills but also not cost me a fortune. I plan on riding either grouse or seymore and I just started a millwright/machinist apprenticeship so if u have any info on what the jobs are lookin like out there that would be nice too. Whats a reasonable living wage to be able to also ski out west and not be a bum. Any other advice would be nice too.
OldmanripperNot sure if it’s an option but you might be better off moving to Calgary instead. Price of oil is pushing things upwards again and you’d likely land a better job in Alberta. Banff, Sunshine, Norquay within 1 1/2 hrs, Louise 2 hrs, Fernie, Kimbo, and Kicking Horse all within 4. Some of the best fly fishing and hunting in the country as well. Western culture is also way less douchey than coastal hiptards. I spent 6 years out there and loved it.
ditchseekerYou could work lift maintenance at one of the hills (millwrights/ electricians), they're usually looking for apprentices. Pay isn't quite industry standard but it's getting better and getting to ski every day at work in the winter isn't too bad. I've been doing it at Revelstoke for the last few years and have overall been very happy with the job.
BLandzIm bumping this thread cuz I wanna know what the best ski hills are in Canada in terms of terrain park/lift line wait times/other terrain. in that order of priority
BLandzYa I have a spreadsheet that I fill out every month of my projected and actual expenses and I shouldn’t have any trouble making $20/hour and paying $1200 rent. Obviously I wont have tons of extra cash at the end of the month but it would be manageable, especially considering im saving for a year before moving out but $20 an hour is me planning for worst case scenario
Word_of_the_LordWhat are Canadian taxes like? Are you accounting for taxes in your expense spreadsheet or simply multiplying your (hourly rate) x(anticipated hours/month)? What about food, water, electric, gas, internet, insurance (car and apt)? Your debt to income is gonna be wicked high with a $1200 apartment

mystery3Taxes are not that bad...they pay for your healthcare.
gongyuancoquitlam should be pretty good, cheaper rent than the other regions and not too far from grouse/cypress
Christian_BaleAlso hmu if u ever end up moving here. Come ride and film with the Chef boys
