More to the point, while it doesn't make sense to buy those vehicles in the first place, the mandatory subscription that comes with it makes it totally ridiculous and it's silly that anyone would choose to purchase it.
I'm sure some pinheads at these auto manufacturers see people paying for netflix/spotify/whatever kind of subscription and think they should get in on the action, but it should be discouraging enough to most consumers that they only sell a handful of units to a few chumps.

its an option on my 2019 gmc canyon and i pay the $50/month for it.

its pretty convenient tbh.

-I drive in areas without cell signal quite frequently and get directions from onstar sent to my car.

-if im travelling and someone needs to drive my truck (i have the extra set of keys in the glove box) i can open it from anywhere and track it too. even see if they topped up my gas.

-you get some amount of data. its great when i cross the border and instead of paying a roaming charge, i just use my trucks data. or when im camping and wanna watch youtube when im passing out. for a bit i would work remotley entriely off the internet in my truck.

-gives you service notifications. (in x amount of miles brakes need to be checked, or tires rotated)

-while i was towing my boat once, i kept getting dashboard errors on and off "service stabillitrack", i got onstar to look into it while i was driving and they could tell one of my wheel bearing abs sensors was getting the wrong reading and suggested checking tire pressure. before i got any warnings or could feel it, they knew i picked up a nail in my tire.

-once i left a power inverter on overnight charging my tool batteries. in the morining couldnt start it. called on-star, they reckon my battery was not good anymore, they had someone drive over a new battery within 30 min covered by gm warranty

-also nice that i dont need to take my keys when i go skiing/boating/biking. i leave them in the truck and use my phone to open it when i get back.


honestly, i think theyre only making it mandatory on $100,000+ vehicles. im sure those fuckers wont even notice the extra $50/month.

Of course the manufacturers know people don't understand value and that they can charge oodles for cars and they'll still be bought. Brand loyalty is surprisingly strong. This only improves their bottom line. People don't like to be told they "have to" do something and people don't like change. This shall pass and be acceptable soon enough.

Based on your points it sounds like OnStar is doing a lot more than what I got from in the article. I still don't agree with the $1500 mandatory charge, but it's good to know it's more than just gps and some music streaming.

Also i get the advantages if you want it but i feel like onstar is the kind of stuff id avoid or tey and disconnect. Not my jam. Really not hard to navigate without it. If you need gps either set up route before hand or download offline areas. If I get in a crash who the fuck cares. I always loved the dramatic commercials to show how essential it is. Almost infomercial fail vibes
