Was almost unheard of for kids to get any actual new equipment back in the day you were always just trading in used shit.


I remembered trading in my way older brothers tiny ass skis and getting money for binders that must have been close to 20 years old was a pretty big gap where equipment didn't progress (until it did again.)

Sport just keeps getting better tbh.

2012-2020 I had some great passes some Epic and great trips to the name resorts in early December when it was still cheap. Never really paid out the ass for nice hotels. New gear regularly.

Now a days I've grown up and ski better shit than whats on the Superpasses but there are no queues at my hills because all the douchebags stick to Epic and Ikon. Not buying any gear again for the second straight winter all my stuff is still good. Flights should be OK this winter the dollar will be strong some good trips to be had. Hoping to get my first heli day in.

Internet commerce and conglomerate ski passes has made skiing more accessible to the middle class than it ever has been. You could want more people to be into skiing, or ski areas that aren't crowded and exclusive, you can't really have both. We have it really fuckin good now but people have no idea how expensive it use to be.

I bet those old Looks were made with much better materials back then, I recently had 1 pair of skis outlast 2 pairs of pivots. Broken plastic, broken metal, junk quality these days.

You can but your also gonna have to bend the shit out of them cause they’re all made for skis that are 70mm underfoot

Agreed. Seems like bindings are a lot more disposable these days. Same with skis for that matter. If you bought a north face shell in the 90s it was like, lifetime warranty- never buy another coat for life type of purchase. Seems like we cycle through shit way faster now.

In the 2010s mount snow season pass was $1200. Now the epic local which adds a bunch of other resorts is $657. That’s just about half the price, with more options. Not related to bindings but I mean, it’s definitely a lot cheaper. Now you can probably dig around for sales and get half a setup and a seasons pass for the exact same price the pass alone used to cost…

I remember tearing open my LL Bean jacket skiing at Loon as a kid and my mom packed us all into the car, drove over to the flagship store in Freeport and I had a new jacket for free no questions asked.

LL Bean is so corporate now. Quality has gone down and prices have gone up. They also got rid of the employee store where employees could get blems for super cheap.

Yeah that was ~20 years ago, they got rid of the lifetime replacement policy last time I tried to exchange something 10 years ago.
CeleryLL Bean is so corporate now. Quality has gone down and prices have gone up. They also got rid of the employee store where employees could get blems for super cheap.

I’ve seen the same thing happen to REI, Nordstrom etc. when I worked for REI briefly they were like our return policy is pretty simple, 100% percent customer satisfaction guaranteed. If the customer wants to return their 5 year old boots because they think should’ve lasted 10, oh well. If you wanted cash for your return that you put on a credit card, no problem. I think they tried to foster a community and a sense of brand loyalty that requires a two way street from the customers not to abuse their good will. As we shifted culturally into a society that is solely just take take take its 15 cents cheaper on Amazon I’ll buy my coat from them and make you replace it a year later… that pact fell apart and companies had to adjust.

AHAHA, a little blast to the past. I remember skiing back in the mid 80's and it was common to see old binders with leashes tied to your leg. Had numerous friends with old hand me down equipment so they could go ski with the ski club in school. My mom was a volunteer patroller which allowed us to trade with other families and have access to some decent stuff. Also had a pretty cool ski club rep that would organize school ski trips sometimes twice a week during the season. We would ski Targhee or Jackson for 20 bucks on a Saturday and night ski out our local on Thursday for 10 bucks which included the transportation. I do miss those days but skiing is still a wonderful sport to me and I love passing it on to my kids. I will sacrifice what I need to do to make skiing happen.
