Craw_Daddy"Mass shootings often are carried out with semi-automatic rifles"
This is flat out false. "Mass shooting" doesn't have a concrete definition but if you go by the FBI standard then it is a shooting with 3 or more victims. You will find that, if you go by this definition, the weapons most often used in mass shootings are pistols. It's not even close. The only reason you think semi automatic rifles are so widely used in them is because of the media notoriety that the shooting gets if one is used.
First of all, I did not say most. I said often. You even quoted me. Misinformation my ass.
Second of all, its true that in many of the most egregious of these events - say, mass shootings of 10 or more, or those targeting innocents, in particular, are carried out with legally purchased semi-automatic rifles which can be purchased and taken from the store on the day of purchase (such as with the UT shooting in '66 when he bought a semi-automatic M1 Carbine - literally the standard issue for the US military in WW2 - and a shitload of ammo even after he had already killed two people). This isn't even just what I 'think'. It's based on objective facts here.
I already listed statistics before on a previous page, but both of the worst mass shootings in the USA were carried out with semi-automatic rifles, and every US school shooting with over 10 deaths besides Virginia Tech were carried out with a semi-automatic rifle or carbine... (all three on this list in the last 10 years utilized an AR15 with 30 round magazines).
Outside of the USA, it's the same shit.
All of these are some of if not the worst mass shootings in the history of their nation...
In the Montreal Massacre - Semi Automatic M14 Rifle.
15 dead.
In Nova Scotia, Canada He used an AR15.
23 dead.
In Port Arthur, Australia, He used an AR15.
35 dead.
In Aramoana, NZ, he used multiple semi-auto rifles - a M43 SKS, .22 chambered kalashnikov and an AR15.
14 dead.
In Christchurch, NZ, he used an AR15.
51 dead.
In Norway 2011 he used a Semi-Automatic M14 and a glock.
67 dead
In Hungerford UK - he used an M1 Carbine and a Semi-Automatic kalashnikov.
17 dead.
Dude, I can look this all up easy as fuck from incontrovertible sources.
In any case... none of this matters... all of the worst mass shootings have happened with legally purchased semi-automatics that carry large capacity magazines... rifle or handgun. Whether its a Glock 17 or an AR-15 with a 30 round magazine, or even just a Mini-14 Ranch Rifle and a 20 round magazine... those are the weapons that mass shooters go to because of their ability to deliver a high rate of fire while also carrying large-capacity magazines.
The responsible thing to do would be to limit the capacity of legal magazines for these guns (and go after illegal accessories distributors), establish waiting periods like with handguns, and to be the most comprehensive, require universal background checks and a day of safety training.
Like I said. I don't even think the AR15 or semi-automatic rifles should be banned outright. I just think that if you break down the facts and statistics based on mass shooting, that stronger regulation of these firearms would be the responsible thing to do, as it has worked (Bullet buttons, and PMR's).
Will mass shootings still happen? Yep. Probably.
But we can limit the severity, perhaps even the frequency, and definitely save lives if we put some limits on these firearms. And that's worth doing.
