Idk I see it as about as effective as magazine restrictions or city gun bans, which are a fucking joke. People will find a way to do bad things; I'm not gonna spell it out online for some psycho to find but using a semi auto rifle is just one way. Sure it's probably one of the more efficient ways to enact terror but it certainly won't stop under any sort of bill banning things.

I'm all for adding steps to the process of obtaining more dangerous firearms (without ridiculous fees such as the NFA tax stamp bs), but banning any one individual type of weapon won't solve this problem. Before you gun nuts freak out over me categorizing something as "more dangerous", it's true. A 9mm round simply is not as dangerous as a rifle round purely by physics. If you can't see that bans are futile, I'm not gonna waste my time arguing with a wall. A ban is not an effective solution.

How far do things have to get to get a perfect answer, in the shoes of the victims? Or how about parents of the victims?

The stories coming out of the shooting are heartbreaking. A teacher died with 6-7 year old children in her arms, executed point blank. How does that not turn your stomach?
Gunman had no history of mental disorder, criminal history, bought the guns legally and this happened anyway. Things are clearly not working because there have never been so many guns in the US and teachers still got slaughted with children in their arms. More guns was clearly not the solution that was preached for 20 years. Nor was mental health or background check loopholes that were blamed and promised, but never delievered.

-eREKTion-I don't believe gun control is even possible anymore. If we could live in a country with no guns, I'd be for it but that's never going to happen because we're too far gone from that. All the gun control being proposed is too weak and couldn't stop these events. Unfortunately, proposed gun control has to be weak because strict gun control is too unpopular and if it was even passed it would be unenforceable.

It sounds like an answer out of the NRA's playbook but mental health is the crisis causing this. There's other countries with lots of guns and they don't have this problem because they have public mental health care. If we did too, that system could play into the existing gun background check process. If there was a free mental health resource that people could seek or be referred to and real professionals were able to treat them and flag them on background checks if needed, it would stop senseless violence like this.

Pretty much they have no interest in fixing it they just want to be able to keep as many guns as they feel like it because A shooting guns is fun or B they're delusional about the government. Before any of those types quote me, bush was pretty popular and he passed the patriot act. Where were you in the streets protesting that with your guns? You weren't, you were waving American flags and doing USA chants.

We also have this weird action hero thing. Everyone wants to be a friggin hero. Random people getting shot seems to be a shit ton more likely than the action hero saving the world but that's the world we want so that's the narrative we'll cling to.

If children can't go to school without getting shot, you can't buy some groceries without getting shot, but we all have plenty of guns I'd call that a win right?

JuviticusI feel like gun control in America is unfortunately a complete pipe dream. Gun culture is so interwoven into society (particularly rural) that there will simply never been enough popular support for restrictions. And the even if they were to ban assault style rifles, there's still so many out there that it wouldn't be difficult to source one. I think that this won't stop ever. It's heartbreaking obviously but if anything could have actually been done, it would have already been implemented by now. America is the only developed nation where this happens so often that active shooter drills are almost as common as fire drills and nothing has changed in the last decade. If you ask me, the failure to implement any effective policies to combat the issue is telling of the continued degradation of American democracy. The two-party system being a major influence on that. Shit like this is why nobody takes America seriously anymore. If this kind of domestic terrorism happens as often and as consistently as it does, why the hell should I think they can handle international terrorism or any kind of global conflict for that matter. Any changes are seen as a target on their identity.
