I agree that mental health is a key factor here, but for example this most recent shooter in TX had no criminal record, no mental health record, he bought two AR15s and like 300+ ammo in the two weeks before the shooting. This was very much so planned and coordinated within the law. If this random 18yo kid couldn't buy two AR15s and 300 rounds, he probably would not have been able to commit this act of violence.
I also understand AR15s are used for sport, hunting, eliminating problem animals, etc, but there should be very strict laws around this, most people buying AR15s aren't competitive shooting, or hunting, or killing gophers on their farm, theyre just building guns and showing off to their friends, it serves little to zero purpose in society. There are a myriad of other guns you could use, people just use an AR15 for fun, a .22 rifle is cheaper, more efficient and is much less harmful against humans.

We have plenty of examples of tyrannical governments taking over throughout history. The playbook is always the same... disarm the population. If you are in favor of a national gun registry or banning certain guns because CNN told you they were scary then you are in favor of disarming our country. It's as simple as that.

Right. Most people have a knee-jerk reaction to banning ARs (Armalite Rifles). It's nowhere near that simple. If banning one specific type of firearm would put an end to school shootings and other criminal activity, I and every other firearm owner would be all for it. It doesn't work like that. There are many, many different semi-automatic firearms out there. ARs just happen to be the "scary looking" rifle. Do we then ban AK-47s? How about Ruger Mini 14s? Then how about...? The list could go on and on and on.
Regarding magazine capacity, that's another dead-end. There are many legitimate reasons for having "high-capacity" magazines. Do you honestly think a criminal contemplating a mass-shooting is going to not go through with it because he can only fit 10 rounds in a magazine? A mag change happens in a split second. It takes practically no time at all.
We have already made shooting people illegal. We've made murder illegal. We've made stealing illegal. We've made cocaine illegal. We've made a whole lot of things illegal. Does it stop folks? Apparently not. I personally shoot semi-automatic weapons extremely frequently. I shoot competitive shotgun sports where a semi-automatic is a must. I also waterfowl hunt. A semi-automatic shotgun is my bread and butter.

My hot take is that Dems need to stop advocating for gun control heavily rn because its too hot and divisive of an issue for people. It alienates 2nd amendment single issue voters and gives Republicans the ability to use the fear playbook more that "theyre comin fer yer guns!!!" I fully support hunting and guns as self defense tools and recognize that most attempts to regulate guns will fall short/ limit marginalized people's access to them who are the ones who need them for defense the most. With more investment into local communities and social services to heal the underlying issues in society, gun regulation could work in the future.
That being said, it doesn't take many brain cells to recognize that our country's relationship with guns is directly related to the amount of shootings. It is avoidable and easy to see considering no other developed country has the same problem. This chart plots how strict each state's gun laws are to their rate of gun deaths.
I personally don't see why anyone needs to have an AR and every defense of them I've seen boils down to them being fun to shoot or the defeat a tyrannical government fantasy. I swear some people just want a civil war so bad and see themselves as the star of the action movie.
