Also.. Trucks are everywhere because people actually use them for work, so I don't know what youre talking about by saying theyre shit on... not everyone is a smug asshole from San Francisco...
Gas is expensive in California not so much just because of the gas tax (that was passed via popular referendum - twice), but because of refineries being shut down in recent years that has limited local production... places such as Marathon in Martinez were idled due to the pandemic dropping demand down to nothing, and others are converting to renewable fuel processing (they're making it so they don't need to rely upon foreign crude - which is a good thing)
Though I will say, the gas tax has some big issues - there should be some sort of gas tax break for people counties with limited public transportation offerings or if you run a family farm or something. You cant haul things around in a Tesla or a Prius, and California is a massive agricultural state.
