@skierman will tell you it's sugarhouse.
If we're being honest, anyone who didn't spend their whole life here will tell you that pretty much the entire SLC area sucks, period. Spread out, no cute neighborhood (except maybe for the avenues I guess), OK food at best, it has no good vibe and no soul as far as cities go. It's the blandest urban area I've lived in by far, no diversity either. Let's be real, it's just a garbage urban area.
With that out of the way, people don't come to SLC for the city, they come here for everything around it. It's arguably the best base camp in the US when it comes to outdoor adventures, plenty to do around on the weekends and you're about a day drive away from all the other cool places in the US for further exploring. That's what makes it a cool place to live in, not the city itself.
So from my perspective, pretty much anything on the east bench is good because you have some proximity to the cottonwood canyons, and it's all pretty safe (on the west bench some areas are pretty sketch). After that, sure you'll have pockets of sorta nice neighborhoods like the Avenues or Yalecrest, but it's even more overpriced than the rest for what it is imo, and if that's really what you want, might as well go to PC.
Northern neighborhoods will save you a bit of travel time when you go to WY or MT, southern neighborhoods will save you a bit of time if you regularly spend your weekends in the south of UT.
Bottom line is that I would look for something conveniently located to where you like to spend your time, not for a 'nice' area, there just aren't that many around here.
