Be a role model for the next generation. My mom who is a personal trainer at a hospital owned gym has seen the same Pro Snowboarder Hopeful come in everyday for the past 10 years to relearn how to walk. He is lucky, because he still has the opportunity to use his legs.


It's your personal choice to not wear a helmet, but as soon as you post your "sick clip" to Instagram and a 10 year old sees it, it becomes your responsibility to put a lid on.

I see your point, but I disagree OP.
It's not my responsibility to be a good role model, It's your responsibility to interpret the actions of others and draw meaningful conclusions.
I fully support helmets though, I just don't wear one myself.

Shouldn't this hypothetical individual have their mom in the lodge waiting for them if they're 10? I'd hope parents still teach their kids to wear helmets...
At what point do we just all censor ourselves because someone might get hurt?

Never said anyone couldn't make their own decision. But they SHOULD be a postive influence. Also do you seriously think wearing a helmet is censoring yourself?

Also your caveat of "might hurt themself" c'mon, just google CTE statistics in contact sports.

I wear a helmet, I wear a seatbelt. People can do whatever they want. Honestly give 0 fucks whether other people wear seatbelt. I worry a little bit sometimes if friends fuck themselves up without helmets and don't change but that's their thing. Actually a buddy who's a pretty sick skier just joined the helmet gang. Had a few pretty serious crashes in a row.

As far as kids, idk. I think things have changed so much already. 20 years ago who the fuck wore a helmet other than maybe a racer or something. 15 years ago some people had them a lot didn't. Industry wise they seemed frowned on still outside of contests. Even 10-12 years ago it seems every kid in the park had one. Probably their parents got them a helmet to ski park. Wasn't a big deal. Everyone else had one on so it never mattered. Still a few people without them but much less common.

I'm just saying that a hugggge percent of people rock helmets now. Plus some of the people that died skiing/snowboarding or things like the crash reel showing how fucked head injuries can be.

I think there is plenty of awareness. Wear one, don't wear one, it's all good. This thread vibes kind of like hysteria after anything happens. THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!! What if somebody doesn't wear one and a kid sees it? People are friggin posting videos climbing cranes and doing pull ups from them and shit. I think a no helmet post is one of the less dangerous things posted.

And again, a huge percentage of people wear helmets these days.

This is a PSA for a problem that exists so much less these days and such a tired argument.



Sparknotes: Sometimes bad shit happens when you ski park/big mountain. People know this. Some people wear helmets, some people don't, a helmet can keep you from dying when you eat total shit. People know this. Also people can do whatever the fuck they want.

I'm confused, your ability to interpret something is limited by age, but making a decision is not?
Either way, you're extrapolating OP, lemme explain myself!
What do you expect a 10-year-old to do after they interpret someone's actions? Probably make a decision based on their interpretation which would be to not wear a helmet (or wear one). Would it be okay if they were 12? What about 14?
According to you, it is my responsibility to wear a helmet if I am posting on social media because I should be a good influence on the younger generation, this is why I ask at what point we censor ourselves because someone might get hurt? (hurt meaning both emotionally and physically). Is David Lesh responsible for the debauchery that ensued following his Friday series? What about ZootSpace and their coffee table stunts?

I don't know about how the rest of the world works but at 10 yrs old I was running skids for electric lines making decisions on that machine that could mean life or death to all my co workers. My point at 10 years old if you can't at least think for yourself get help.

And also I almost never wear a seat belt and the fact that I can hop into Marge the dump truck or the 7.3 f550 not wear may belt and get fined by a cop. But I can hop on my ninja that I don't have without a helmet or anything is so retarded.

wearing a seatbelt cuts your chances of getting fucked by 50% especially in rollovers. i seriously couldn’t imagine getting ejected 50 feet out of my car just cause i didn’t wear a fuckin seat belt.

Eh, the way I look at it, if it is a extremely "common" thing for the community to do, then most people will follow suit just to be like everyone else.

Take skating for example. Barely anyone wears a helmet at your local park. Young kids or older people starting out don't want to be "that guy" wearing a helmet. Even if no one makes fun of them or says anything, they feel like they aren't fitting in. When I was young I hated that I was forced to wear a helmet, because no one else was and that made me feel weird.

So I guess the idea might be the inverse of that. If 99% of people skiing are wearing a helmet, it just becomes something that dumb kids (8-18 or older) will do because everyone else is doing it. In mountain biking you'll get weird looks if you aren't wearing a helmet, and that's probably a good thing.

Most of my concussions didn't come from skiing, but their nothing to mess around with. So anything that get's people to feel a little more socially pressured to wear a lid is probably a good thing

I’ve got brain damage no doubt ab it all of my concussions have come from skiing, and most of them I had a helmet on. I can only imagine what those real bad ones would have been like without a helmet. At the same time, I see people doing shit 5 times more difficult than me without a helmet on almost every time I ride, cudos to them. But all it takes is a few good knocks and you’ll never go without one. The only time I don’t wear one nowadays is if I’m on the cam in a very small park getting stationary shots or

Shooting sub 2 feature follow cams. The only time I’ll ever bitch at someone to put a helmet on is if they’re my homie and I know they’re trying something totally new or something they don’t have bolts. Are beanies a cleaner look than a bucket, yes. But at the end of the day it’s 100% that persons call as to if they value look or their personal safety more. Also if they’re young and impressionable kids like OP mentioned, 95% of the time their parent is gonna make them wear a helmet.


In CT I’m almost positive every hill with a park is helmet required to enter or u get booted which imo is kinda sick. There’s even a hill that won’t let you ride at all without one. But in the wide world of skiing, it’s absolutely a personal decision, and we all need to be okay with not being okay with other peoples choices just bc it’s not something you’d do normally.

I only started wearing a seatbelt after having kids, been wearing a helmet skiing for about 15 years. This past winter I was riding the magic carpet with my 3 year old and didn't have a helmet because it was hot. My wife took her back and I rode a couple laps with my dad without a helmet. It felt super weird and i definitely noticed i was the only person not wearing one.

Seems to me that helmets are for more prevalent among skiers than snowboarders. Even in the park crowd.

The past two years i have started to notice that i am a role model to a lot of kids, i talk to the kids on the mountain pushing them and hyping them up. The last thing i would do is coolguying them, making them think that being a total douche is the cool thing. I almost always wear a helmet, both for myself and for the youngins who are about to throw their first cork.

i can vouch for this. i got into a gnarly car accident a few months back, not gonna go into detail but i veered off the side of the road, ran through a few metal poles and rolled 30 or so feet down into a storm water pond. thank god for japanese engineering and seatbelts, especially the latter, without it i probably would’ve been shot right through the windshield

If you’re under 18 it is 100% the responsibility of the parent, not an influencer. I bet the parent is buying the gear, lift passes etc. Rule for my kid would be no helmet no ski. If you’re over 18 it’s your own choice.

OP what would your opinion be on someone like say McConkey, or the free solo climber Alex Honnold? Should Alex use ropes and wear a helmet because kids might copy him? Of course not, he’s a free individual to do as he pleases.

I like to wear a helmet whenever i’m hitting rails or jumps but I will never give anybody shit for not wearing a helmet. I’m told as an instructor I should wear a helmet to be a role model for new people, and I do see where they’re coming from, but it’s not my responsibility.
