What makes a difference between posting clips to show your homies and get your name out there, and being a tom wallish pro influencer kid? Like Sleepy Grill vs like Karko or Votaw. All 3 of them post frequently but karko and votaw just give off a clout chasing vibe. Is it possible to consistantly post to get your name out there and take advantage of the spotlight social media can give you with out being flamed for being an influencer kid?

This is an interesting question and I first wanna say that I personally follow and enjoy sleepy, karko, and Votaw. Karko and votaw definitely have different styles of posting than someone like sleepy or say like cal carson. I think it all stems from the idea of stacking clips for an edit vs just posting clips you got that day/weekend. Some people like to post consistently, others lay low and then drop a banger edit outta nowhere. I dont really have an inherent problem with either of them, but some may view one of those as more "core" than the other. Theyre all better than me so who am I to say.

And I could never call Karo a clout chaser dude just loves skiing and I respect the hell out of that.

All the dudes you listed are all kind of different in how they use instagram. Luke is probably the only stereotypical “clout chaser” because he’s flexing designer clothing in his videos.

- Sleepy grill has multiple street parts and is part of buldoz which is a highly respected crew. Posts clips like everyone else.

- Luke votaw is a talented comp jock esque skier who uses instagram to market himself instead of building himself up a following by hitting street for example.

- Karko isn’t on either of these dudes levels i think he just seems to be doing his own thing and posting every single clip he gets on his gram. Also hits street more than the average person but doesn’t save the clips???? like man what are you doing.

Karko is an enigma to me. If he stacked all the street clips he got in a year and actually made a decent edit I feel like it would get a lot of love. But he just goes straight to the gram with everything idk. Super nice dude tho and hes got a great trick bag. Is he on ns?

All three of these dudes r ripping skiers

i think the stylistic differences come down age and skiing niche

EZ is a Harlaut inspired millenial… his clips speak for themselves he goes viral across all platforms like every other week. He’s also got segments w buldoz & tons of other euro crews, he’s got big sponsors like Oakley and haurlat apparel… he doesn’t NEED to promote, his skiing, full segs, and insta clips speak for themselves. IMO he’s already made it into the hall of fame and will be around for a long time.

Votaw is a comp jock/academy kid…. His tricks, style, and content all reflect that. He’s a young up and comer on the traditional comp circuits - he’s skiing parks and courses w the rest of those kids and tryna run up their clips from training - to me I definitely get Gen-Z TikTok vibes from some of those quicker cuts & reels. As dope as some of that content is I much prefer segments with a little more artistry and story telling. Not to put down the skiing at all the next gen comp skiers are out of this world rn.

Karko is a self-taught east coast park rat/skateboarder using IG as a main platform to make himself known. Not being a comp jock or academy kid (far as I can tell) he’s showcasing his raw talent the only way he can - using a free platform that is visible to the entire world, and promoting himself. And it’s working… How else would I even know about a random unsponsored skier at whiteface NY? people love his creative style and even though he does get tech AF his content is relatable. Yeah he posts a lot but it’s well received bc it’s just the vibes of cruising the local hill goofing off with the crew.

Im not down playing any of these skiers, they are all increble. But what gives them the right to post all the time verses someone who isn't as big as them getting flamed for doing the same thing as them? I just saw a thread about instagram reel tom wallish pro kids and it just made me wonder whats the differnce? Everyone's just trying to get themselves out there, yet some people are flamed for it and some people are praised.

Karko is one of my favorite follows. All it is are clips for him skiing and hyping up the homies. He’s not trying to get clout by posting other stuff just straight up dope skiing and none of the other bs. Sleepy is also dope in that sense except his buldoz parts are a great way to watch his skiing in a proper film but can also watch what he’s doing all year long in insta. Both are 2 of my favorite skiers to follow.

Before someone @‘s me, when I say succeeding I just mean getting followers and gaining a larger audience

But yeah if you post anything ever you are feeding a superego, nothin wrong with it, but if you truly only cared the art you would never post tricks on the gram.

The reality is, skiing is a lot of our crafts, we obsess over this shit, we work over it, we ALL have a desire to showcase that to the world, and let’s be honest, we would all love if more eyes were lain on our hard work.

Even the prodigies like Thall and harlaut STILL had to self promote

even before the internet age you still had to line up your photo video guys, submit to the mags, make “sponsor me” videos and ask to get invited to shoots and comps.

Honestly it’s skiings skeleton in the closet…. You kind of have to be a self absorbed narcissist to make it… it’s part of the industry. There are hundreds of DOPE skiers from over the years who never made it to that next level bc they just didn’t give a fuck about self promotion, content, or the “business” stuff.

I don't know the others but Karkoski just really likes to ski.

Idk i get some people like posting more than others but if you feel like posting, like a trick or rail you hit, and people want to see it? Why not.

I dig seeing him hit some of the different rails in the area and most of the clips are whiteface. Gore, and other mtn in the area.

Idk I dig it.

If i wasn't so shitty at snowboarding, and def skiing at this point I'd probably post more.

If you're stacking days on the hill, getting some tricks or lines, and feeling hype Idk what's wrong with sharing that.

honestly, the best thing is to not take it too serious, that's what i feel like sleepy grill and buldoz boys do, they just shred and film some tricks. it's not as tryhard as luke trying to spin his way into 2030 but ended up in a 2015 hypebeast meetup

As an absolute dogshit park skier, Karkoski was probably top 5 nicest dudes I’ve ever met skiing. He and his friends started a conversation at big snow with us about sewn pants and mismatched skis. Absolutely zero judgement the whole time we were there on the fact that we can barely ski compared to them. All the times I’ve talked to one of these so called “ski influencers” they seem beyond stoked to have the opportunities they’ve created and are just happy to be on hill.

I don't think Instagram is that bad honestly. you can watch longer clips which is cool and makes it easy on a phone and to gain outside audiences although using reels I thinks is kinda stupid cause then its just Tik Tok. That app is garbage for skiing. Zillion bot/repost accounts that just repost clips non stop so once you get to the actual level one account posting the authentic clip you've seen it 30 times. I personally think everyone should just stay away if you want to actually gain a solid following. That being said if people are gonna rip your clips for followers might as well post first so it's really hard to say what's better. I guess Tik Tok just reminds me of the Fagans and fuck those kids.

Which happened to me by posting clips to show my homies and get my name out there. I don't consider myself an "influencer" my instagram profile to me is my personal blog of my life primarily centered around skiing with a side of other things that I think are cool.

I'm very thankful for the amount of people who follow me and enjoy the content I post. As a 28 year with a full time job it keeps me motivated to continuously progress my skiing and put out content. I honestly never pictured myself skiing the way I do still, and having so many people care about watching my ski videos so thank you to all of you who vibe with me and what I do!

IMO anyone who is flaming other people for posting ski content at any frequency is probably just projecting insecurity about their own skills or confidence. Like the question in this thread kind of has the answer in it, which is that there isn't a difference, it's just about who is perceiving what you are creating.

I always bitch about IG skiers because I personally think a 2-5 min edit has way more potential for self expression and if you’re sick enough to drop clips every couple days than you can easily stack the best ones and make a real edit that is atronomically better than the individual IG vids you make. You can still post shit on IG, but at least stack the best shit and make a legit video. Otherwise you’re making videos for followers on IG and not for the sake of making the best ski video you can make.


Heres another huge point. 95% of the kids at my local think that they are into skiing, But my homie bought V’s last szn and none of these self proclaimed skiers knew what Vishnu was, but they follow guys like Toph on IG (that wasnt a diss, just an example). My point is, kids like that is what makes up a big % of the ppl that follow these IG skiers. These dudes are clout chasing for kids that arent even core riders. Id rather have 1000 kids watch my shit on NS that are die hard skiers than have kids like the homie at my local who doesnt even know who Andrew Egan or oski are.

I might judge people for it. Sad to see people falsely represent skiing in a way and lose the sight in mind… to have fun. and if you want, make art. That’s what edits truly are.

Lol yeah as the first person who responded to this thread I saw your question, but didnt really answer it. More just started talking about how different skiers use instagram in general. But Karko isnt a clout chaser and doesnt ski for clips, dude skis because he loves it
