Storing skis over summer

So NS, whats your way for best results and worst results?

I detune the bindings completly and melt on a bunch of wax on the bases and store them in a closet. So far, great results

For worst results, forget them in your car and leave the windows opened. Make sure your trunk looks like the beach too. Skis will be decomposing withing 6-7 months

Made the mistake of leaving them in my basement, basement floods frequently, edges looked like the underside of my car, now they just chill in the corner of my room

I turn the dins all the way down and put a piece of tape on the din window so I don’t forget to turn them back up. Usually hit them with a hot scrape and then lay a good thick layer of wax on the bases and edges and lay them under the bed. I can’t bring myself to store them standing up right.

I store them at the bottom of my pool, water preserves them nice

I just leave mine sit out in the ski racks at the mountain. That way i wont forget them for next season

Always wax without scraping after the season. Will do enough to keep edges from rusting and protect the bases. Then I just have to scrape for the first day the following season. I usually do necessary p texing/epoxy first if there are any core shots/deep gouges and use a file to remove burrs on the edge. I also hear it's a good idea to turn dins down and grease bindings but I forget to do that every year.

Apparently keeping them tight all year round can dampen/weaken the big spring in there. I didn’t know that til this year lol

My parents used to wash the ski and boot shell with soapy water, set to dry and store. Still to this day, I think that was weird as fuck. They changed their habits since they became ski instructors, but still, they would have kept on doing it if no one else told them…

No, I don't put them in the trash you monster! I put them in the compost pile so that I can grow a fresh new pair of skis for next season in my garden.

In a recent panel discussion at the Blister Summit, the Salomon binding engineer said there’s no need to turn down the din on bindings. The bindings will drop off the indemnification list before the spring characteristic changes whether you turn them down or not. Other parts wear out before the spring does.

Removing rust from edges, and then applying and not scraping a coat of wax that covers the edge will protect the base from dust & dirt and edges from rust is good practice for protecting your base and edge over summer.

Another thing you could do would be to put epoxy on any exposed bits of core because of topsheet chips.

Also on our skis, re-applying a coat of teak oil on the hardwood sidewalls will help keep the sidewalls in shape.



for boots, fully drying out the liners in a warm, dry room and cleaning off any dirt/salt from the spring parking lot from your shells will make sure you don’t corrode the heel and toe plate screws. Then clipping them back up to just looser than you would clip your foot in and keeping them in a dry place.

are horizontal ski racks better than vertical ones cus i have these vertical ones but every time i look at my skis on them i feel like they’re flattening them out

Yes, din fluid will settle at the bottom of the binding and ruin the springs

They don't get destroyed over summer. They dry up and get brittle if you don't take care of them which makes them get more damage when you ski the next season than if you took good care of them.

I put them in the corner of my room on my last day of the season, then grab them again on the first day.
