Ski Boot Sizing - Size up or down? Bootfitter Question - Uneven feet
Hi, I have been skiing in 26.5 Lange RX 120 Low Volumes for the past 2 years, but they are a tad big on me and can not tighten down well on my leg without all the buckles being cranked down. Also tend to get ankle pain from sitting low in relation to the heel pocket. I went to a bootfitter recently when I was on a trip to Bozeman and they measured my feet with 3d imaging saying that I would probably do better in a 25.5. Even with volume reducer underfoot, my ankle had a hard time sitting in the ankle pocket of the RX's. I've never really enjoyed the RX's since i've had them due to this sizing issue, even with alterations made to it. My feet are two different lengths by about 9mm difference which is fairly drastic, basically a whole size. My left foot is like 256mm and right foot about 264mm. I picked up these hawx ultras from evo after I was recommended to try them, and I like the boot fit but they do feel very tight, with the right foot obviously being tighter in terms of boot length. Do you think with shaving/punching combinations I will be able to extend the right boot by a half centimeter or centimeter to accommodate the big foot or is your preference to size someone like me up to a 26.5 and then attempt to reduce volume on the smaller foot? Keep in mind that in my current 26.5 boots even the bigger leg does not make good calf contact on the cuffs unless they are basically fully buckled down with the ladders at the furthest position. The boot fitter in montana said his preference is to size down and expand for the bigger foot, but another boot fitter I spoke to said the opposite. Any boot fitters here that can comment on this? To give idea of shell fit, my left foot has maybe a centimeter or so behind heel when in the boot, and right foot has probably a half centimeter, being a tighter fit. I can feel my right toe definitely poking the end of the boot a bit, not horribly but just enough to not comfortable extend my toes all the way. I am an avid skier and would be okay with a tight fit as long as it does not deform my toes like chinese foot binding.
Are the Hawx's 25.5? I believe the Ultra's shell can be shaped pretty extensively. I would think sizing down and then working on the boot with the larger foot would maybe be the ticket.

Yes, the Hawx's are 25.5. They feel tight, but I know that they currently feel the tightest they ever will, I personally believe that we will be able to accommodate them to my foot for length and whatnot, just want to get some opinions on it as I know that you have to be careful with modifying the toe length since blowing it out could affect the DIN or how it actuates with the bindings. As a lighter weight skier as well I really enjoy the softer flex feel, I've been skiing my RX's with both back plugs out which should theoretically take it down to about a 98 flex, but the flex in these Hawx still feel more suited for me overall. Would be really intriguing to see how a pair of 25.5 RX LV's would fit, maybe I would like the boot then.

JuviticusAlways size down. Way easier as a bootfitter to increase volume vs decrease
What they said.
The shell can be lengthened by 5mm rather easily with the help from a competent boot fitter with the right tools.
