Pretty huge considering last year at this time it was $12.32 an hour and now itll be $20.

I also hope that the owner of my resort sees this and quits trying to run a small midwestern resort like vail and also pays employees $20

Wouldn't be at all surprised if they make some bullshit like only offering certain benefits to full time employees but then hiring only part timers at a cap that is one hour less than full time.
Or they could just continue to operate dangerously understaffed knowing that they will profit just as well regardless of how the "skier/guest experience" suffers.
Or they will continue to fuck the housing market of the towns where they own resorts without consideration for where there employees will live or if the pay increase is even sustainable for someone to afford rent and groceries.

I still say FUCK VAIL but at least they have bumped their minimum pay rate.

When we are actually doing work or park sets sure 20 isn't too much but lapping the park 75% of the time for 20 is a lot haha. I'm more worried that they will start having us swing chairs between rake runs, in which case I'll go back to 10/hr since it's not the job I rely on for my income. It will hopefully help us retain some of the full time guys which will be sick and the dudes that have been grinding it out for shit pay will be happy.

Not really complaining about getting paid more. It's more the fact that I don't want more responsibilities while I'm there working since sometimes the only days I have time to ride during the week is when I am working. I thoroughly enjoy working park crew and maintaining features but if I have to start swinging chairs I'll probably stop. Again this isn't what I rely on to live.

I think it was just their plummeting stock price that caused this personally, but I like to think that the discourse helped too.

Vail as a company makes like an 8% return annually. This last season they lost around 40% of their staff and still operated full bore. Pass prices and staffing will be changed to assist in all of your trust funded ideologies of earning the same as the underpaid skilled trade workers. A single class of equally unmotivated/unskilled/miserable workers is well on its way.

Exactly, and with inflation you'd have to sow seeds just to eat. Raise wages in relation to inflation on a schedule so that 10 years down the road we aren't making the equivalent of what in 2022 was 6 dollars an hr. which looks like 20 dollars an hr but isn't. But it's a free market and empoyers can do whatever. I just don't like the mentality that people don't deserve 20 dollars when absolute parasites and political grifters who enrich themselves off your taxes, make 1000+ dollars a day.

I coomed. Yes, try to be an indepedent contractor. If you are under contract for someone, or some corporation, half the time they give you less than 28 dollars an hr., which is absurd because as an indepedent contractor you pay substantially more taxes. Just to survive, an IC should be getting 38+.

Because they realized they could raise min. wage when inflation increased, that way, when the dollar devalues each month, you'll eventually have the purchasing power of a a 2008 dollar but think you're getting 25 dollars an hr. "Hi, how much for that piece of bread?" "That'll be 40 dollars sir."

He has, he still has stock in the company, he just raised a long time underling to the status of CEO. Vail is still a corporation and profit comes before employees. Apart from inflation, there will be a catch, they should electronically make it so that your wage is attachhed to inflation to sustain the purchasing power of 20 dollars from
this point forward.

To be fair they reduced season pass prices last year even after bumping their minimum wage. If they had cheap day passes on top of cheap season passes the already crowded resorts would be even more crowded.

The divided plebians often like to compain about their own class and do not lift a finger against the 1% parasites. The amount of times I've heard upper middle class electricians say that the US should stop spending because their in debt (to them self; which they can't be) or that social security disability comes from their taxes (it doesn't) so the old lady with a bad back should just shutup and die, is an often occurrence. All this while scumbag politicians with fake jobs retire at the tax payers expense, bankers shyster, billionaires hoard,
offshore and price gouge and the poor get poorer. Wallstreet would have to be glassed for anything to change at this point.

At least there's NFT's and digitial hologram coins for the kids to gamble with.

I hate that this is the first argument people go for.

Should just stay making 14 so there's a 2 or 3 dollar difference.

Patrol was already boned making like 16 everyone at vail was making 15.

Wage compression is a real thing but everyone needs to fuck off. This is a good thing, impressive with how negative everyone has been.

I didn't post as much in this thread, but i was talking about how good it is for the industry, how all the wages are going to go up.

Altera is about to go 20. A bunch of mom and pops are going to raise up.

Right now many of these places in ski towns could not open without j1s. There's a valid argument about seasonal work but a lot of people work season jobs in ski towns outside of ski resorts.

You just can't live in these towns on 12 an hour (3 years ago) or 15 last year or 2 years ago.

If you work 40-50 hours a week you should be able to pay rent and buy groceries. Otherwise it's a bullshit wage.

I don't get all the "some stoned liftie shouldnt make 20?" Arguments. Who cares. Mtns have been closing because they can't staff lifts, mtns have been keeping good terrain closed because they cant staff lifts.

This is even good for the rich fuck who hates everyone and demands all his favorite runs are open when he goes skiing.

The free market people also come out with their shot argument about the market deciding whats right. But then skip over that fast food and gas station jobs, pretty much all jobs in ski towns other than ski resorts have been increasing wages to staff jobs. Aka 12 was a bullshit wage.

Imagine people being so stubborn about anyone getting a fare wage that they would rather have terrain closed for lack of employees, or have the mtn actually shut early for the season than somebody being able to buy groceries in a ski town.

This us verse them shit is half the reason our country is so beat. There's always some other, somebody lower than us or different and every problem is their fault.

It's good because on one hand, it puts other employers in ski towns that aren't VR entities in a position to bump their pay, take care of current and returning staff, and try not to lose good help to resorts.

$20/hr or more is still unfortunately just not enough for the current state of COL in a lot of places VR owns properties. PC is a brutally atrocious market....my coworker is paying almost 2k/month for a one BR with his girlfriend in whats considered "affordable" housing. Its fucking gross. People are taking advantage in ski towns and its a bummer to see. Fuck you slumlords and fuck anyone cashing in on it as well. A paycheck is still a paycheck but also fuck you.

I say fuck vail and fund pns they have done nothing but good for timberline and pns is still corporate but it’s America. America is corporate. I firmly believe even if they see the money they will do what’s right for skiers. They have an anti vail mindset too. Would u turn millions of dollars down like pns did.
