what are the cutouts at the tips of some skis for? i see a pair with them every now and then but haven’t put enough thought into them to figure out what they could possibly be used for

Marketing reasons.
"Our skis have this new technology (hole In the tip, asymmetrical tip, a pin,) and it makes you 0.0001 seconds faster"
Unless they're for skins, most likely a gimmick to try and differentiate their skis.
Rossignol Soul 7 comes to mind with their see through "honey comb tip"... looks cool, probably doesn't do anything.
