Its pretty simple why Putin and the russian oligarchs are attacking Ukraine: Defensive positioning.
By taking Donesk and its neighbour province, it gives Moscow more distance between the NATO countries. Ukraine is a geological bottleneck to the russian plateau. By taking Crimea in 2014, Russia gained an important economic zone as well as an access to the sea.
Why now? Ukraine is trying to join the EU and NATO for the last few years. Putin knows that if this happends, Russia will be placed in a hard-to-defend boarder and an attack on Ukraine then, will trigger a global war Russians will lose.

Now the good news. Common russian are not on board with the invasion. Over 2000 people around Russia have been detained for protesting the war, with tens of thousands still protesting.
Next is the economic sanctions are working. With russian assets seized from international community, this invasion will cost the russians a lot. Its already hit the citizens; inflation is doubling every day, the currency is almost worthless and stores are running out of food. It may not seem apparent now, but angry civilians usually take down governments in uprisings. Russia is no stranger to them.
Dont forget that OPEC will be opening their strategic reserves and flood the marked with cheap oil to cut Russia off their oil market.

I hope you now understand what is going on in Ukraine. The world wont end, and like Crimea, it will be soon forgotten.

I believe poutine's endgame is to make everyone fat and dependent on starches.

Some other contributing factors are Russia's shrinking population (every year that goes by the number of fighting aged men goes down), and the Ukrainian natural gas reserves that could outcompete Russia in providing the EU with energy.

put-in dummy government in ukraine, sure, but i dont see how he could justify cutting all the ties with the west. even if there are economic/strategic gains from controlling ukraine, do they outweigh losses for starting a war? does he simply see those losses as a worthy investment into russias future?

what is he really planning? what do you think is main objective apart from the cookie cutter news outlet theories above?

Not saying I'm convinced of this but one thing I can see is that he has a terminal illness which would explain his scorched earth behavior. Recent pictures of him show he's really not in good health and even Russian media has been speculating on severe health decline having influence on his actions.
