Americans (and maybe EU nations) are living in delusion basically telling Russia “if you invade Ukraine, you’ll be in big trouble, mister” threatening sanctions and all sorts of bullshit. But Russia has the support of China, you think they care? China has way more global power than we want to believe. Russia and Ukraine hold enormous amounts of oil (and specifically natural gas) that is supplied to European countries for energy and everybody is already screaming about high prices, wait until their energy bill triples still. US has lots of natural gas but we can’t transport it in scale. China has a stranglehold on the global supply chain as capitalism outsourced everything to China to save some bucks and make stonks go up. China’s belt and road initiative has blitzkrieg written all over it. I know this is speculation, but Russian trolls have also potentially been destabilizing united nations across the globe over the last decade too. It’s Russia and China’s world for the taking. Why are we so hellbent on going to space again? The war for natural resources is going to get a lot more brutal

we’re just left with hopes and dreams and the hope that NATO actually has any power.

Eh maybe.

In a no holds barred traditional war I still think China and Russia don't stand a chance. A land invasion of the U.S. is impossible. No one wants nuclear war and no one wants to implode the global economy.

I think WW3 is unlikely, but we will probably see an increase in the number of proxy wars around the globe. I think in a scenario where the global economy collapses the U.S. still comes out ahead of Russia and China. I think Russia and china know that and look to exert influence in other ways.

China ships things around the world because we allow them to. If we stopped getting things from China it would be rough for a while, but I believe we could ramp up production to the point that we may not be able to get a new iphone every year, but everyone still gets food and medicine.

Plus, if it ever happened that we stopped getting shit from china, you better believe that with a navy larger than the next 13 nations combined china ain't getting shit either....and they have a billion people to support.

And I think traditional armed war is a thing of the past—this is more likely to be strategic (as all war really is) but much less troops on ground even though I likened Belt and Road to blitzkrieg (hey it could happen, but thats less of my concern). Russia has been really snooping around the underwater fiber optic cables though, and while their locations are public knowledge, it is still quite suspect in my mind.

Like I touched on with space exploration, it feels like we’ve all but decided it’s just easier to colonize space than save our own planet. Also as much as i half-jokingly will argue that US is not first world anymore, we can’t ignore the fact that US is still the epitome of material markets. We take for granted what we have, everyone wants to own a Tesla, meanwhile much the rest of the worlld just wants heat, clean drinking water and food. They’re not so concerned about what kind of powered car they have.

it’s off-topic but i can go on why i’m optimistic we can make a change. Clean energy ETF etc. our parents used financial advisors who pushed all sorts of funds especially oil, but hopefully green energy and stocks like Tesla will continue to baffle financial analysts for being way overbought but it wont matter to us because we like tge world and we LIKE THE STOCK!

I feel like we're wasting our time doing any wars that aren't against climate change. It needs to be a much more global effort. Everything about war is so much more detrimental to the environment than most daily stuff, it's sad to see. How badly will China want Taiwan after it is fully covered by the ocean? Will Russia still want Ukraine if the whole country is riddled with wildfires, floods, and severe weather?

Russia has a unique problem because more than 50% of their economy comes from fossil fuels and resource mining, providing a lot of jobs and support for Putin. If he pulled back on the patroleum sector, people would be upset. Also, Putin claimed global warming would help, as much of Siberia and other parts of Russia were miserably cold. However, this actually did happen and the permafrost melted, causing massive infrastructure distruction. Now Putin is on board with reducing Russia's carbon footprint, but what that means for the future is anyone's guess.

To me, the most obvious solution of reducing unnecessary emissions is cutting back on the global military industrial complex. Of course no one who has control wants to do this. I think if a true WW3 broke out, everyone will be fighting a multi-front battle. Against the enemy nations and against climate disasters. The world is not ready for that

I'd also like to voice my hatred for tankies in this thread.

You can both condemn past American involvements and Russia's current involvement and potential future involvement. The sins of the united states do not absolve Russia of their sins. I hear so much of this "U.S. bad so what Russia doing good!" from both individuals on the far right and on the far left.

Russia is a violet autocracy, looking to increase its influence in Europe, potentially by invading a sovereign nation that recent polling shows is 65% in favor of joining nato and 75% percent in favor of joining the EU. This could potentially result in thousands of deaths, or worse, war in Europe.

And people want to blame the U.S. for this. Mindblowing. We are not the ones moving thousands of troops to the border along with millions of dollars of military equipment. Even if we were, it would be with the express goal of defending a sovereign country from one of our largest competitors. It blows my mind how many people see the U.S. as the aggressor here and cite the people of Ukraine wanting to join a defensive alliance as evidence of that.

If you are from the states and support Russia, you are anti-freedom and not in any way a patriot. You're also a dumbfuck.

And let me be clear, this isn't me saying that we should put boots on the ground or even start bombing ourselves, I'm simply complaining about the loud and growing minority of Americans who support shithole dictatorships or autocracies just because they are in opposition to U.S. institutions.

Cutting fiber would fuck china and Russia just as much as it fucks us, and considering the depth of our satellite arrays our communications would still be more consistent than Russia or China in the event of a global war.

They don't have f-35s. We do. As much as it sucks that we spend an obscene amount of money on our military...we could turn 95% of the habitable areas of any country on earth to glass in less than a week. Without using nukes. The full power and depth of the American military has not been used since WW2...and maybe sorta Vietnam

There is no country on earth with military technology that can compete with us, and that's just the technology they've told the taxpayer about. I'm sure lockheed has been cooking up plenty of crazy stuff that is not on the books.

And to your first point, a modern war would likley not require many boots on the ground compared to the past. It would be an air and naval war and we are uncontested in both.

Well most of Taiwan is near sea level, especially the important parts to China (culture, people, and industry). The mountains and highlands of Taiwan don't seem to have many resouces that would make the remaining dryland worth far less than it is now.

The potential Biden/Putin meeting is interesting. I guess I’d consider myself overall right of center, but Biden has a huge chance to gain some respect if he can throw some weight around with one of the most dangerous dudes on the planet.


the cynic in me says if they do meet, Biden will probably make some concessions and Putin will play him like a fool… I think it’s pretty clear that one thing you can’t call ole Vladdy boy is stupid. I think this whole thing is a game of 4d chess anyway and he wants to see who’s playing checkers. Still, If Russia doesn’t go in in the next few days and they meet I’m giving Biden the major benefit of the doubt.

the other option is Biden created this whole situation to look good before the midterms cause it looks pretty fuckin bloody as it stands right now. Pretty much all politicians are sociopaths at the least. This shits so useless.

I agree that countries need to start putting up troops, but at the same time it’s counterproductive as Russian media is in full mode telling Russians about imminent attacks by Ukraine and NATO and they need to register for military for the motherland. I have no doubt most of Russia is on board already as is half of Ukraine, but idk if we need to be fueling the fire even more. Sounds like Putin is recognizing two seperate states in Ukraine so one which is loyalist to Russia then the rest. But seems it’s just a matter of time before there’s conflict between the two

Shitty thing, but i’m really gonna be fascinated to see how stock markets play out. Everyone is expecting a sell-off, but then again we’re already down significantly and a rebound could come out of the blue (see V-shaped recovery even while world was deep in grips of Covid), USA is after all a war economy.
