ON3P Jeff tune question

Hey guys,

Got brand new stock Jeffrey 102 191's, and skied them for the first time today. They felt quite hooky, and were not tracking well, or together - like one ski would engage for a turn while the other ski stayed locked in. When I compare the edges to my other skis, they "feel" less sharp, but I know sometimes this can be hard to tell. It seems very noticeable though. Is this normal for ON3P's?

Do I just need to detune the tips and tails? If so, should I start with just a gummy stone? Or should I start lightly with a file and then gummy stone? What about a diamond stone on the edge angle? These skis are being used for all mountain - no park, no rails.

I am not opposed to taking them to a shop, but that's going to be a hassle and if this is just a tuning issue seems like I should be able to do it pretty easily.

I got these exact skis this year too, and for my all mountain ski so no rails. Felt the same you described but they really like a center stance. Press your shins into em and you’ll find it’s life.

what were you skiing before?

Yeah could be. They felt pretty far forward for sure. Other daily's are PB&J's, Deathwishes, and Devastators. All have somewhat forward mounts. The Devs have almost the same mount point but don't feel like it at all. Maybe you're right and I just need a few days on em.

Anytime this has happened to me it’s because the ski is edge high. Makes it feel nigh unskiable.

Check to see if its base or edge high (not gonna be base high tho I dont think).

Take something straight and long (screwdriver or big allen keys usually work great) lay it against the base of the ski and see if light goes through. If light goes through the base you're edge high and if theres light on the edges/it wont go flat youre base high. Probably wanna check multiple points of both skis to be sure. Only way to fix that will be taking it into a proper ski shop who can do a base grind.

On3p skis do come pretty detuned from factory usually so I dont think detuning them more will do much unless something irregular happened at the factory. You're already saying they feel dull though so I doubt more detuning will be your solution.

It could be your technique too maybe. Especially if you A frame when you turn (outside ski has a higher edge angle than the inside ski). The extra taper and rocker on a jeffery compared to most skis may just make the effects on your skiing more noticeable compared to a more traditionally shaped ski. If your inside ski feels locked in its quite possibly a framing.

I had the exact same issue on two pairs. The edges needed to be tuned. They should come from the factory at 1 deg base bevel and 1 deg side bevel. When I checked them the bevel was closer to zero. Have a shop tune the edges, tell them you want a 1 base and 1 on the side ( I prefer a 1 base and a 2 side) then make sure to detune the tips a d tails. The ski will be night and day.

Bingo. This is what I did and the skis are 100% different.
