Moving to co- best mtn town

Hey all-

work is taking me to CO. The ideal situation long term is to have a place in Denver area then in a mtn town. Not as much worried about cost as I am experience. So, what’s best?

not only access to skiing, but to all outdoor activities. Mtn biking, camping, water. All the goods.

also, I’ll take any recommendations on areas in/around denver area with best access to this stuff as well

Protip: get away from Denver.

Aspen. Telluride. Durango. Glenwood. Crested Butte. Gunnison. Grand Junction. Eagle (pushing it).

Gunnison or glenwood areas are underrated. Glenwood is close to aspen mtns, gunnison is close to crested butte and monsrch. Black canyon of the gunnison is a super underrated nat park. Glenwood canyon is one of my favorite stretches of highway.

The san juans are pretty tight and not really slept on but more quite than west denver aka summit.

I also really like eagle and edwards ares. Edwards also has a sick skatepark of you skate. Beaver creek is a great ski area.

Idk, CO is more than summit county.

Objectively further from Denver is better. That said, if OP is committed to summit (why), look at the south park/Fairplay route.

Anything but Denver my brother moved there recently and if he wants to ski he has to sit in traffic for eternity

I need to have access to denver readily enough for work, but really don’t want to be there full time. The traffic seems absolutely miserable.

as far as it goes skiing, and no other factors considered, what are we feelin for co mtns?

I mean, you have to be where you have to be sometimes but you're pretty limited. Depends how far you're comfortable driving on weekends and budget.

Summit can be miserably crowded and is still groeing thougg.

What's your range of driving from denver? Are you strictly weekends and trying to work in denver and dip out on friday for the weekend m

I have a fair bit of flexibility. My work is remote, but will require me to be in Denver area on a semi regular basis, but I have control over when. So crested and telluride miiiight be a bit too far, but this would be a situation where I could spend weeks at a time in either area. Let’s just assume for these purposes cost isn’t a factor

Edit: OP replied clarifying before my comment was posted. If it were me I’d do telluride or Crested butte. They’re just as expensive as summit county or aspen but better terrain IMO

Arkansas River valley. Salida, Buena Vista, or Leadville. Can bike to trails from your house, traffic to the ski areas is a breeze compared to i70, and the towns are not total resorts yet (although bv is getting there). Good place to get into paddle sports too.

Copy. Sounds like you might have to be around denver. But you can still get out to other places for breaks throughout the season. A lot of good mtns to check out.

I 70 traffic can be trash as expected with weekend traffic. Even the other routes. If youre working remote I'd try to take off more midwest if possible.

A lot of plsces are too far a day trip. Summit kinda blows though.

You're stuck with summit, but traffic won't be a problem until you hit Breckenridge. Drive up on 6 on Friday night to the cabin, ski abasin, in the lot early, all relatively stress free.

Don't tell anyone though.

OR if cost really isn't an issue, Telluride/Aspen/CB+heli/private jet.

Gunnison/CB or Aspen.
Both have daily commuter flights to Denver.
If the weather is shit just drive it before the pass closes.

Aspen has way more skiable resort terrain but Gunnison/CB is more away from rich folks and Gunnison is super rad for mountain biking.
I'd move back to Aspen in heartbeat but Im not trophy husband material and will never be able to afford Aspen/Snowmass real estate.

Leadville/Granite/ Buena Vista/ Salida should all be on the table for Colorado consideration.

It’s good as anywhere. I swear to god you guys are so fucking spoiled. Go ski a hill in the Midwest for 5 years and tell me Breckinridge sucks. Fuckin rich snob assholes

Salida or Gunnison if you can't swing Aspen/Snowmass.

The Western and Southern parts of the state don't suck much either.

Mountain towns have a way of blending into one.

I hear you.

Breck is also the only mountain on the Epic pass that Vail cares about and will spin lifts at as late into the spring as possible. Everywhere else have hard shut off dates regardless of snow level. Its a fun mountain yes there are others with more cliffs/rocks etc.

Everywhere is crowded on Saturdays mid season and everywhere is empty mid week.
