I don’t watch the Olympics’ freeskiing because I can’t count the spins

that being said I was watching US vs Czech Republic on Saturday night with the boys and man when I tell you that shit was intense… we got a noise complaint.

Im all for understanding how devastated she is, but it sounds like she has that Ricky Bobby mentality of “if you’re not first, you’re last”.

pick yourself up and try try again the next race. She seems like she’s ready to throw it the whole towel.

im not surprised with how she handled things.

at 26 this is very likely her last chance to really be competitive in the olympics. also, those american poster ski girls have a lot of pressure on them. we all would rather see an american or canadian on the top podium instead of some euro robot. those were her best disciplines. it would be a great comeback story if she podiumed or got gold in super g or combined. no american has ever won womens combined.

not saying thats how she should have handled the dnfs, but i can empathize with what she was feeling, which is what the olympics are all about imo

Before the olympics started I watched her interview with Lester Holt and she made some joke like "maybe I actually just shouldn't even go" and I was SUPER surprised to hear her say that even casually. I feel like all the other athletes in the Olympics are like "this is the single most important event of my life" and to hear her even joke about not going was pretty eye-opening.

she blew the turn on like her 4th/5th turn(s) and boom was done. this was slalom last night which i think is her forte, and i guess she did similar on the event before this. she's not in a good headspace, that's for sure

i hope this doesn't turn into another simone biles thing where i have to hear every dumb fuck's hot take on it for the next week. we don't need to devour our own over this shit

both vonn and street seemed pretty tired by their 30s.

to be fair, they both had pretty bad injuries, even multiple times.
statiscally, age is one of the biggest factors when assesing the risk of injury. the odds are stacked against her. she was already missing some WC events earlier this year from back problems. i think thats where her "bad vibes" are coming from.

For the sake of the sport, i hope the stats are wrong. i love having a north american protagonist to cheer for amongst the euro snobbery. i even got her signature on my cast when i was working in lake louise!

agreed. hopefully she is able to take some motivation from these last two DNFs and come back more balanced.


at first i was embarrassed for her sitting there but i think i really do get it. everyone was shocked by her first DNF the other night and then to have it happen again is completely unheard of. plus slalom is her shit. it's not like in freeskiing where people sort of care about competition and you're still respected/sponsored for being dope - the race literally is everything you train for and the results of it determine your job performance. to be the best in the world and blow it like that twice in a row is pretty ridiculous. will be interesting to see how she performs in the other events.

Pretty easy. Taking a minute or two to cry it out i understand, but then it turns into 5, 10, they gave her time but eventually seemed to start skiing around her 15 minutes later. It’s just crazy looking at the spectrum—on one side you have guys like Henrik honored to be there and having a blast win or lose, on the other hand—Shiffrin. I get shes under enormous pressure from USA ski and her sponsors, but sometimes in life you need people to call you out on your BS to keep you in check. And it’s nothing against her, i’m sure she feels ashamed that there’s girls who deserve a shot that was wasted.
GloryHoleGaryDamn how y’all going to shit on Mikaela like that?

Also i doubt she’s checking NS so no harm, but if this somehow goes viral i’ll be honored.

Also someone post a video of her falling, all I'm finding are photos and if the first photo from this page is from her run then wtf is up with the course? Snow looks awfully deep for a race course. Unless that's out of bounds.

She didn't fall last night if thats what you're looking for. She got her angles wrong and just knew she wasn't going to be able to recover so she just skied out of the course.

She did fall a couple nights ago, she was leaning so hard into the turn her boot hit the snow, which then popped her edge up and lost her grip.

I think he was just devastated cause he fucked up his chance for gold. I probably wouldn’t dap up the homie after that either. But I think he went back and hugged him after, could be wrong tho.

Have you ever read about her life or any of the specials she has? She literally eats and breathes skiing. It IS her. Her entire identity is skiing and being the best. It’s a huge blow to athletes when that’s their identity.

I feel bad for her tbh. That’s a tough fall and then to have everyone witness it. People don’t talk about it enough but to be the best, you’ve got to have a bit of an ego that fuels you and makes you feel confident. We see it in A Hall, we’ve seen it in Goep (pole break at X Games), we’ve seen it with Henrik (last X Games and how he acts when he stomps his run). Now we’re seeing it with Mikaela. She’s only human.

Not too sure why everyone’s bashing tf outta her, she’s def in a horrible mindset rn especially considering she’s questions everything in her career. Not fair to bash a human and still extremely young related to the grand scheme of things, there’s people who will sob over a bad test grade so why is it fair to bash her for just chilling on the ground for 20 mins after her whole life’s work just went to shit? She’s legit the poster child of the USA ski team just like vonn used to be so I’m guessin all that’s weighing her down

Facts. She def felt the pressure this time even tho she's been absolutely lacing the world cup. Wait 4 years to ski on shit snow at the biggest comp after killing it on actual mountains. Course was very fucked, gotta go all out for any shot and since it wasn't ever tested half the field crashed. Terrible to watch, she's in so much distress that you can feel it thru the tv. Ricky Bobby mentality is a double-edged sword. She's gonna get back tho, already bigger than Vonn and still the best in the world.

I don't follow racing as much as I used to, but I think the fact that Shiffrin's best disciplines are the more technical ones means that she has a lesser change of those sort of horrendous crashes you see at Super-G and DH speeds and thus a better chance at an extended career, at least from a physical standpoint. A blown knee can come out of nowhere, though, as any skier knows.

I feel like you can be competitive in slalom a bit longer since it's more or less the slowest form of racing, so you don't die if you crash once. I know racing is her thing but she should chill. How many racers in any other racing sport have had the same thing? Plenty, especially in stuff like MotoGP where one slip and you're in the gravel trap unless your last name is Marquez.

That's what happens when you add a nationalistic dimension to an action sport just so gapers will feel invested enough to tune in. Its almost as cringe as the fucking morons on here crying because Gu is not repping "their" flag at the Olympics. Grow the fuck up.
