I know she’s incredibly skilled and dominant within her field, and I also know pro skiers are typically left leaning (and have double digit concussions and didn’t go to real high school) and liking communism aligns with those types of views and behavioral patterns, but is anyone else legitimately mind blown by the amount of high profile pros who seem to support her? I don’t see how she garners such massive support (from westerners) despite having made a choice to support a government who kills and imprisons their political opponents. BTW I’m not saying all pros are concussed idiots, but I do know the VAST majority of them grew up with a Grotesquely privileged lifestyle, and advocate for change, UNTIL it involves cutting off support fo someone advocating and competing on behalf of one of the most horrid dictatorships on earth. Also, I know shit is political and you can’t just tell the best female skier she’s a horrendous person (even though it’s true), but I hope and pray some of the big time pros come out in opposition of her and her abuse of the top notch US training
dan38I was referring to both the bottom where the girls were all comforting one of the girls who'd just fallen (I forget who) and Gu just looks at her almost scowls and walks by. Even while the girls were all on deck in the waiting (box?) room all the other girls and coaches were cheering or cringing at crashes but Gu just sat in the corner away from everyone looking pissed. It felt like the girls had a ton of camaraderie last night, which I think is fucking sick, it just doesn't seem like she's apart of that group love.
I watched the entire event and didn't get this vibe, kinda seems like you're assuming a bunch things to come to a conclusion you think it's acceptable, which is your opinion for sure. But, seeing as you don't know anyone in this event and your experience is based on what you see on TV, maybe you should consider that before making assumptions.
gravelmost countries’ governments do have a payout for athletes that medal in olympic events. idk what chinese brands she’s also repping but at the very least i would think that the ccp is paying her reward incentives for medalling.
Yeah definitely, but thats not the 10M that she is due to make if she wins gold, which is the only money anyone has been talking about.
Professor-ModeloWhile the comment was insensitive, it highlights how fucking dumb that argument is considering the vast majority of children in China don’t have access to consistent food. The only kids In China who will get on skis because of gu are the ones who’s fathers own factories in Shanghai, and abuse 7 year olds for 80 cents a day.
Unfortunately, this is a pretty big common misconception...just found this on BBC, figures from the World Bank.
"In 1990 there were more than 750 million people in China living below the international poverty line - about two-thirds of the population. By 2012, that had fallen to fewer than 90 million, and by 2016 - the most recent year for which World Bank figures are available it had fallen to 7.2 million people (0.5% of the population)."
I just want to clarify, what is going on in China in terms of human rights issues is absolutely FUCKED and I'm glad that the Olympics are shedding light on how many atrocities are occurring there. I just hate when people use that as an excuse to say racist things.
TL;DR: Yes, China is fucked up as a country, but not all Chinese people are bad people and deserving of this hate.

I literally never once said Chinese people are bad, or their culture. Just their government.
Professor-ModeloThank god I don’t need your approval to go about my day, lmfao. I don’t need a “pass” from you because I chuckled at something. And while the gap between rich and poor is out of control here too, and skiing is definitely and unfortunately a “privileged” sport, the severity of the situation is MUCH MUCH greater in China, so the whole “inspiring Chinese youth” thing is just a crock of shit, unless you’re talking about the top .1%, of course
I wasn't giving you a pass, I was just letting you know that making a comment like that is racist, its fact and if you don't want to accept it i dont fucking care dude

I believe some sports analyst agent dude or something like that arrived at a figure based on his own calculations and estimates, but I could be wrong. As far as I know there is no single entity planning to hand her 10m for a gold medal

The only racist part of the joke was “ping ping” as it’s an insulting made up name. The rest of the comment was 100% factual, and does not imply superiority in any way shape or form. Addressing the challenging conditions in China doesn’t make someone a racist, but I could see how one takes issue with “ping ping”.

I never said anything about the other stuff you said, I said the joke was racist and you come off as racist if you think thats "fucking hilarious" but you seem like a pretty big anti-china guy so it doesn't surprise me you are completely numb to your actions.

Agreed, I don't think anyone was hating on the Chinese tho, just everyone shitting on their government.

Idk man, even my GF who I was watching with and knows nothing about skiing picked up on it (she called it “mean girl in high school energy”) and I didn’t even mention anything to her. Maybe it’s just a girl’s experience with cliques thing or maybe the two of us are just cynical, old, and jaded.
BiffbarfIf you see my joke as racist instead of criticism of china's willingness to steal children's future for consumer grade electronics you're hopeless.
Bingo. Racist is some of these kids favorite fucking word I swear to god
SSteezleHow does this have upvotes? Why don't you live over in China for 5 years and report back to see if you still stand behind this statement.
You don’t have to live in China or the US to realize that both countries commit horrible acts. I’m not saying that China dosen’t. I’m saying that it’s ironic people will get mad at Elieen Gu for competing for China but gloss over the US own human rights violations

Just want to clarify the is what I was talking about. I fully agree with everything in this post 100% .

I don't really think either of you have the experience to judge how someone feels at an event like this, but I'm just gonna leave it there and move on.
Professor-ModeloKids have zealot parents, and Donald trump fucked up peoples brains so badly that they totally lost the ability to think objectively about anything at all related to politics.
They see China as a not “trumpy”, and people who hate communism as “trumpets” which is their shitty childish way of dismissing the opinions of those who disagree
I think its more that people want the country (US) that they live in to be looked at objectively. I agree the China is worse than the US when it comes to human rights, but no powerful country has become powerful without taking advantage or fucking someone over at some point.
I'm sure there were some people in the US that would have loved to have china's surveillance tech during the cold War so they could round up all the commie sympathizers and jail them.
I also find it interesting that China would want someone US born/trained to be their poster child for the Olympics, but I guess that could be spun.

ski media boy tells people they’re not cultured enough to form an opinion on an occurrence in a ski contest 😂😂😂😂

I've been to tons of big events in the last decade, just speaking from my experience, don't try to call me out on some bullshit cause you got nothing else to say to me.
BiffbarfIf you see my joke as racist instead of criticism of china's willingness to steal children's future for consumer grade electronics you're hopeless.
The pingping “joke” was racist and completely invalidated whatever ignorant point you were trying to make after the fact. The majority of people in China are earning significantly more than a $1 a day. Your comment might have been true 25 years ago but not so much today.

Is this suppose to be some sort of counterpoint? Significantly more than $1 a day? You'd be right 25 years ago?

Deflecting what, I’ve simply moved on from your shitty racism allegations to just making fun of you for being a pompous asshole who thinks his opinion on anything is the greatest of all time

The joke you said was "fucking hilarious" was racist, that is a fact, its not an allegations, its racist. You can keep deflection and justifying your actions, again i dont fucking care, just letting you know that its racist and you should maybe consider that in the future.
And at least I don't upvote my own posts, talk about being full of yourself.

I'm not, I'm just telling you that it was racist dude, like imagine going through this much just to prove to yourself that laughing at a racist joke was acceptable.
Michigan_SucksOnly one of the countries you mentioned currently has millions of their citizens in literal concentration camps.
Gu is easily the best female skier in the game right now and I respect the effort she puts forth. Doesn't change the fact she is selling out for a country that is commiting a genocide in modern times.

Over 387,000 civilians have been killed in the Middle East since 2001. The US has a serious incarceration problem especially towards minorities. The US funds far right groups. The US supports a active apartheid state in Israel. The US has inhumane detention camps on the border and are actively dehumanizing the people who are confined to them (sound familiar?) The US passes laws that prevent women from having abortions. The US passes law to prevent certain groups from voting. I’m not that China isn’t bad. They are. But anyone who says the US isn’t as bad is just as brainwashed as anyone in China.
PeteMahnAnyone who compares the U.S to China is a legit fucking retard and either lives with their parents and or has some cushy desk job and so they don't know shit. Once you actually get out and work / work with immigrants, then you will learn a thing or two. People come to the U.S with nothing and live life's that wouldn't even be possible from where they come from. All the Bernie bros acting like the American dream is dead have the work ethic of a snail which is why they have a net worth of 2 dollars and a Casio wrist watch.
Once you work with people from places like the middle east, Cuba, Brazil, El Salvador then the last thing would do is compare a country with a class system (China) to the United States.
Something no one’s mentioned is that she’s been competing for them for years, starting when she was 15 or so. Seems to me it was probably a choice made mostly by her parents.
Don't start with me with China in their economic and financial stances. Anyone who is apart of the CCP should be killed in public. This is how China is going to enter Europe by putting countries in debt and crippling them like they've done to many African countries. They want access to the Mediterranean and this is the start.

Yeah you're right, the US government is bad. However the CCP is straight up dystopian future evil.

Tons of deals with major brands, fashion brands, and exposure in the US and mainly China. Honestly 10m is probably an undersell.
Lindsey Vonn, a ski racer, dated Tiger Woods, who was certainly one of the biggest names in sport and a worldwide celebrity. That's the level of clout this shit can do. Do not underestimate what all the exposure, results, and good agents can do for their career and notoriety.
