Non-ski boot reccomendations

moving to vermont need boots
my winter shoes are vans half cabs and I have a feeling that wont suffice in -20 degree weather
need something suitable for hiking but also for daily wear that isn't too clunky. Not high tops. Mid tops. Dont like untying shoes...
Down for leather. Generous budget if the boots will last a long time.
NS, what do you wear out and about when there's fresh snow outside?

Here I set up a little show room for what I use to get by.

Merrill moccasins, Merrill Thermos, Sorel Caribou. You’ll be covered for- getting the mail, getting the mail when it’s shitty out, surviving a winter on the Siberian Tundra.

Neos Overshoes, thigh high and insulated and you can wear whatever comfy shoes you want underneath them. Id definitely recommend the Navigator 5s with the Stabil-icer sole. I got just the regular soles and regretted it, still great boots tho

They’re sorels Idk the exact model waterproof something or other… these have lasted 4 years with a lot of use sometimes miles a day. If you’re a hunter, these ones are really quiet in the woods/leaf litter/grass etc. bc of the large surface area and soft rubber. Also you can tuck sweats between the liner and the shell so no snow can get in

I commercially fish in the summer so I’ve got quite a few xtratuffs around the house. I’ve got the shorties and a few others but the standard 12” are by far the way to go in most situations IMO. I almost always wear them on the way to and from the mountain

I really liked my danner boots with vibram sole in the winter, the winter weight sole was softer and noticably better on the ice than regular work boots. Have some keens now with carbon safety toe and they are very, very comfy but not as grippy on ice and I haven't had them long so I can't say how they hold up.

Yo OP what size is your foot? I have an awesome pair of boots im selling near half price that I only wore once. I live in Vermont but am away for a month.

The boots are gore tex La Sportiva Raptor GTX they are miss like your looking for and super lightweight and comfy. They're like boot form of a running shoe. Since they're gore tex they aren't bad for the summer either because they're breathable. here's a link to the listing:

Sorels run big and you kind of squish around in them a little but oh man do they feel good on your feet.

Wesco boots can not be beat. They are expensive but worth every penny.

Whites are also very nice.


If you don't want high tops and don't want to lace them every time, you'll want whites.

Sorels. I know they're totally popular know but I have the same pair of Sorels I got for xmas when I was 16 so thats worth something imo. Lots of powdays spent driving in those :)

Unless you live on a farm, what do you need boots for? Never understood why people wear bigass sorels just to avoid touching snow while they walk from their house to their car and then across the parking lot at work.

Probably so that their pants and socks dont get snow all over them, that melts and gives you wet pant bottoms and socks.

A farm was the only possibly example you could think of for requiring boots in the winter time? Fucking gen Z you guys are hopeless indoor folk
