Weed culture in skiing

I was introduced to weed when I was 13, it was at my local ski mountain by my ski homies. By 14 and throughout all of high school and my early 20s I smoked a lot of weed on a daily basis. I was high 24/7 and I definitely attribute my addiction to weed to being deeply intertwined with ski culture. In high school for example, I was one of the first and only kids who really was a stoner, while at the ski mountain all my friends there smoked. Also at the time, Tanner Hall was huge and definitely was influencing kids like me to smoke. Generally, from what I've seen, smoking weed is just a normal part of being a skier.

The thing is, its straight up not healthy to be smoking 24/7, especially though out your formative years. I can personally attest that I have developed a bunch of mental health issues from smoking so much weed- anxiety, depression, poor memory, general spaciness. I haven't been smoking for a couple years now, not out of choice I just couldn't afford it towards the end of college and never really picked it back up. But when I look back at the period of my life where I was smoking so much- it seems like I wasted a lot of those years being high. I had a razor sharp memory in my youth and can remember much of being a kid but it all kind of became a blur when I started smoking. I became generally unmotivated and lazy throughout those years. (I can say that weed helped me with creativity in art) Overall, I just think its safe to say weed got in the way of a lot of my youthful aspirations.

I know that it effects everyone differently. And heck, who's to say I wouldn't be any different now if I had never touched weed (although I just highly doubt this). I think the thing is, its generally unhealthy for kids to be using weed during their formative years, especially to a great extent. So, I kind of have to question why its such a big part of our subculture? I will say I don't think its been "advertised" as much in ski videos of recent years as it was when I was a kid. Maybe the current generation is diverting? idk im just bored at work ranting, but yeah..

This is the same story I hear a lot from other kids that smoked when they were younger. Honestly, I would not advise anyone to smoke at all until your at least 18 and your brain has time to develop. I started smoking in college and smoked and skied a lot but was able to keep everything in moderation. Yeah I was a little foggier but I had a lot of fun and met some cool people and I dont regret one thing about it. So yeah, just be a kid and do your thing and stay away from booze or drugs until your brain is ready to handle it.

Or just don’t be high 24/7... I smoked pretty regularly from age 15/16 to now (22). Make sure shit gets done first, take school seriously, smoke when its appropriate. It didn’t turn me into a brick but I guess everyone is different. If ur just gonna smoke all day every day then yeah it’s gonna slow u down.

I was introduced to mama ganja when I was 15 with some ski homies too, I was afraid to smoke at that time but I still got high cuz we were boxing some dudes whip, I got home and laughed at my cereal bowl for 10 minutes lmaoooo, my parents knew but they just let me vibe and I got the drugs talk a couple days later, thankfully my dad is a stoner too so it was more of an "everything in moderation" talk. I never really smoked again until senior year summer cuz I was a varsity athlete in Nordic skiing and really did not have any time to smoke. I definitely feel though that there is a lot of pressure to smoke from the community, as good as it is that the ski community is very weed positive, I think its very important to use a good deal of moderation. this is why I fight so hard for federal legalization. If we educate kids on how THC actually is we can create a safe environment for those who want to experiment when they are ready to and of a good enough age, as well as having safely grown weed rather than street weed.

1 month into the longest tea break ive had since i was 17 (27 now) and it feels pretty good. Not life changing or anything, honestly im just a little bit less of a slug and not so scared to shit in the park now. Also being stoned af in the woods and losing the crew and getting lost is scary as hell, yet the groomer trail is probably like 30 ft to the left lol its just not as fun

When I started smoking my dad told me his stories of boxing gondolas in the late 80s. I think weed and skiing are really intertwined because of how well they go together. When I’m stoned I get relaxed but also focused, and skiing fast and landing cool shit becomes even more pleasurable. Plus with some good music it’s an absolute vibe.


I think the reason weed culture is dying out in skiing is because weed is becoming a lot more socially accepted and it’s not seen as a sort of rebellious thing anymore with legalization in a lot of states

Cool thing about weed is people say it’s not addictive and isn’t harmful when it’s the complete opposite. Your brain naturally produces cannabinoids to control your dopamine levels, when u smoke weed and get cannabinoids from an external source your brain decides that it doesn’t need to keep making them and relies on you to get them from an external source. If relied on too much your brain can forget how to produce cannabinoids, if u catch it early enough it takes 9 -15 months for your brain to start naturally producing them again, but that 9-15 months are hell and are super depressing. In some cases where it’s not caught until your brain is done developing your brain can permanently forget how to create them. Which sucks, you’ll have to be on meds for the rest of your life, and from personal experience the meds help alittle but don’t work as well as your brain normally does. Stay safe out there fellas

I didn’t start smoking until well into adulthood (product of growing up in the hardcore scene) but never a dick over straightedge stuff. Going into neuroscience and childhood development the posts in this thread are absolutely right that under 18 shouldn’t be using regularly but that ship has sailed for most of us haha.

When I started I approached it like drinking and would only smoke on social occasions and use it to get over anxiety. Although at the time this usually meant gobbling edibles and drinking fourlokos until I was shitfaced which wasn’t much help.

Now that I’m familiar with what strains work best for me and have addressed the underlying mental health stuff I smoke regularly and find it helps me with focus while doing of things like skiing and banging out housework.

I didn’t really start smoking a lot until I was 19 and I’m really glad that I waited even though I was sorta a square in HS. I was smoking a decent amount my freshman and sophomore year of college but now I get drug tested for nursing school so it’s not really worth it to smoke. I have lots of friends that still smoke and it definitely becomes an addiction for people if you don’t manage it well. Moderation is important with all substances

I remember a lot of stuff vividly around 15 then I started smoking. Sure I remember somethings but blurry during HS. I’ve slowed down but do it maybe 3 times a week

There’s a lower lethal limit of caffeine vs THC, and people have died from too much caffeine.

Coffee is also MUCH more addictive than weed. A lot of Americans can’t even start their morning without it.

Smoking weed is the only thing bad about it, which can be negated by either taking edibles or vaporizing it.

not to mention how shitty the coffee industry is, using other countries resources and legal slavery. Weed however is mostly always grown in the US, and more times than not locally.

as far as weed in videos. making a video in skiing a lot of people just want to capture the experience, and that can mean showing smoking weed because it's so ingrained in ski culture. doesn't necessarily stand as an endorsement, it's just a reflection of what any given day might be like out there.

Yea I see what you mean. Wasn’t the best wording, what I’m trying to say is that coffee is safer than weed. I don’t understand when people say coffee is a worse.

It depends on the coffee tbh. I like the way sweet sugary fresh drinks smell but dark nasty burnt shit stewing in a breakroom all day or people's breath who just drink black coffee is gross af

For a developing mind that I agree, and abusing it I agree as well.

but in moderation it’s cool like o just use a small vaporizer thing, smoke just a bit, and enjoy my night. I don’t smoke before school/work, or if I have any thing to do important.
ToddlerBodyBagI agree with you on caffeine but let's not pretend that weed doesn't have any bad side effects for your brain.

I was high 24/7 and smoking pretty much twice a day for almost a year and quit and it was the worst experience of my life. Weed addiction is real and don’t let anyone else tell you different

Idk man i think some people can handle smoking weed every once in a while honestly and i even think some drug use can be healthy in opening different parts of your mind. But i think you definitely have to be a fully reasonable adult to have a healthy relationship

Agreed its not black and white but disagree with pretty much everything else. Like sure, I got a 4.0 in college while i was simultaneously a stoner, sure i could function. But do i also think i could have done way better without it and also had more direction in my life? Absolutely. When it comes to drugs and alcohol, i think if you ever find youself thinking, “damn i need to smoke rn” or just doing it generally whenever you are bored or daily, you need to be questioning yourself because you are probably self medicating. I also find that most stoners i know get mad angsty when they havent smoked yet. Definitely overall a negative thing to be using any substance for the majority of your waking hours, or even 25% of your waking hours.

I should say I respect everyones choice not to use drugs as well. and I think most adults can also smoke weed or drink a beer or whatever healthily and occasionally as an adult if that's your prerogative. There's definitely people who can't use in a healthy manner whatsoever. And, I do agree stoners love to say "everything in moderation" meanwhile smoking weed everyday of their lives lol

Fact of the matter is, people like to blame their circumstances on one thing in particular because that’s how humans are. Chances are, weed didn’t “cause” your depression, nor was it the sole factor that stood between that other guy achieving all of his childhood dreams. If it’s a problem for you, you’ll know it’s a problem and it’s up to you if you care enough to change it. Live ya life however the fuck you want; your mindset is toxic to begin with: “Oooh woe is me if I just didn’t do x, y, and z look at how different everything would’ve been” dude, ur gonna be depressed regardless if that’s where your heads at

Thanks yeah maybe thats what my post sounded like i was doing but i didnt mean to come off like im blaming my own issues in weed. Of course Id still have shit to deal with regardless, id say weed was more like an unhealthy coping mechanism that really just ends up making shit like depression worse. On top of that i can 100% blame my shitty memory on weed (or on myself for smoking weed) because in 7th grade i was tested and found that my memory was top 1 percentile in united states and now its fucking shit m8. What i really meant to say in my post is that if you find yourself relying on a drug, using it is doing more harm than good. If you’re depressed and start using weed constantly, your depression is probably gonna get worse. Drugs arent an answer to your problems. Thats what i meant
