Can I ask why you want to go to the U? Like what you think you'll get out of it? You're well below avg gpa there, which means if you do get in you are going to be paying for alot of a substantial out of state tuition out of pocket. Unless you have a really good reason to go there for all of your years of undergrad, hit some community college first. Pay way less money, get some stronger grades, and then apply as a transfer student. You might even be able to find some scholarship money. Definitely don't go to an out of state school if your main reasons are skiing and 'the college experience' or whatever. It will not be worth the debt you put yourself in.

Yeah man you bring up a good point. I’ve just had my heart set on going out west since I was a kid and the u always had my interest since the first time I went to Utah. I just feel like I want to get out of Nh and travel asap while I can, I’ve been in this same spot for 17 years and wanna go experience something different and new. Skiing isn’t the only reason, although it’s definitely important. I wanna get out of my comfort zone and my bubble and just go try it. I have a pretty strong feeling wherever I go around here I’m just gonna be surrounded by the same people I’ve grown up with, as a lot of my friends are going to schools all around me. I guess it’s not a bad thing but idk I just wanna start a new chapter, doesn’t even have to be u of u. Everyone I’ve talked to about traveling have been 50 50 about it. Half had said travel for college, even my guidance counselor is encouraging me, and the other half are saying to just go after college. it may sound stupid but

Nah man I feel that, branching out and trying new things is important and Utah is a pretty good place to live. However, consider that you'll be spending $30k+ a year to attend the U at first as a non-resident, not to mention the interest on your student loans if you go into debt to pay it. There are other ways to live in UT or elsewhere and ski, whether that be community college, a trade school, or as some kind of apprentice/trainee in a skilled trade. These all cost substantially less. Its up to you to decide whether or not the difference to go to a 4 year university is worth it. College is about as good of an investment as you make it. If you want to go and work your ass off and earn a valuable degree (You can totally do this and ski a fair bit if you manage your time and priorities well), it is 100% worth the investment. Otherwise, reconsider.

I don't want to discourage you from going to college because it is a fantastic investment if you make smart decisions and put in some effort. Just make sure you consider all possibilities and understand the costs involved.

Real talk you don't have to go to college right after hs too. This will get thumbsie-downies from all the normies who took the standard route but there's tons of benefits to starting school later in life. You can build your GPA at a community college (make sure credits will transfer to the degree plan you want) while you work and ski bum. Once you're no longer a dependent of your parents or if your parents are broke enough you can pretty much get free school via grants to nearly anywhere you'd like. Take some time off, shred a bunch, and if you're motivated enough school will happen at some point too.

This is such facts, if you don’t know what you wanna do don’t go out yourself in 100k of debt. You can make a shit load through trades which are usually just a 2 year program max as well. It seems like in this age a bunch of kids just go to college gwt a business/coms degree for nothing other than to be on the normal path. If I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to be I’d just do trade school and become a welder

If you take on a bunch of debt to go to 4yrs at the U you'll have the worst year of your life once you have to start paying student loans after graduation. You won't be skiing much if you have to make payments + rent + bills, you'll be working a big boy job and getting abused by your boss.

If I were you I'd hit a community college in SLC for 2 years, bang out your gen eds courses at the easier school aiming for a high GPA, get a scholarship to the U, get a degree from there with no debt. then once you graduate you can fuck or for a year or two and ski bum before getting a real job or whatever. or get a real job right after college that lets you ski a lot, both are feasible, more so with a better degree, but if you don't keep debt down you'll have to focus way more on work to pay off loans and that means less skiing.

I'd also wager based on course load and difficulty you'll ski a lot more going to a community college at first. if you're an average student at a small-medium school the U will be a performance adjustment for you, you'll be paying more to work harder and have less time to ski, shitty tradeoff. with the time saved on community college coursework you can probably get a part time job and pay for more ski equipment and ski trips during school.

Sounds the actual academics aren't something you're worried about. If you want to bramch thats great, more people should do that, but using college with no academic goals is the worst way to do that. Being a student s a full time job plus overtime and you'll rack up life binding debt to do it. Sign up for river guide school or something, work weird but fun jobs for a bit. The Nation Parks system has some cool opportunities for young people, theres a lot of ways to explore the world than going to a university. If you have an academic goal you're confident in then go but if not don't.
