Best college to ski at

I am a senior at Boise high in Idaho and good accessible skiing in college is a must!

I’m most likely going to major in mechanical or biomed engineering and my top 3 schools im looking at are Montana State University, University of Utah, and University of British Columbia.

I’ve toured the first 2 and liked both but what we thinkin for the best college from a ski standpoint?

I’m a pretty well rounded skier who likes big mtn but will also spend entire days lappin park with the boys!

Students at these schools/ex-students, anything I should know?

yea I checked out that school last winter and it’s dope! I skied 3 days at bridger and 1 at big sky and they were very fun.

Western State University in Gunnison, CO. I skied over 400 days in the 4 years I was there. 30 minutes to crested butte.

how were lift lines? Hesitant about CO because I’ve heard of huge traffic backups and overcrowding. Probably just at Vail resorts down there though🤷

MSU spends a ton of money on their engineering departments- definitely would consider. Between that and Bridger Bowl you'd kinda have the best of both worlds.

Tbh though peep all three schools in person (if you can) and see which one YOU like the best before committing to anything.

Michigan Tech. Super reputable engineering program and a ski hill literally on campus. A lot of nsers either went there or are still up there too.

Yeah the whole traffic thing only applies to the front range/i-70 corridor. CB is pretty far from all of that

Oregon State University Cascades in Bend is a fantastic spot.
Went to MSU my freshman year, didn't like it too much. Loved OSU Cascades

OP get the hell out of Boise and go to MSU so you can spew about how core Bridger is for the rest of your life. Also do us all a favor and don’t come back to Boise.

Oooh an MTU alum! You two must be so proud. But guess what…. SO AM I. That’s precisely how I know what a complete joke it is. I was even a mod on the meeting they just had about knocking down Dillman and removing the MUB. I built the winter carnival rail jam in front of DHH for three years. There are no “core” skiers at Tech it’s just a bunch of failures who ski to satisfy the PE credits of their worthless engineering degree and then spray about how cool it is to have a “hill on campus” on Instagram.

I don't go to UBC but I do live in Vancouver. There's three local mountains Seymour, Grouse and Cypress. Seymour + Grouse both have good parks and Cypress has the best terrain imo. If you're into big mtn those three hills will probs not be that good for it but you can always head up to whistler.

I grew up in Boise my whole life skiing bogus and now I'm at msu. Bridger is comparable to bogus but super gnarly terrain. It's so awesome the skiing is great but also the energy there is great everyone there skis... Everyone

MSU also has a great engineering program. Im in the IMSE department and I love it

All in all OP tech was a pretty cool place to go to school. Went out west with the club every year for a week for like 350$ everything included except for food.

Pretty great urban. Both child labor and hornbeck have filmed up here. Some other groups coming up to film this year.

Boho gets the best snow in the Midwest. Closest thing you can get to a real mountain is only 45 minutes away.

Ripley is owned by the school. 5 minutes away. Your season pass is "free" but you gotta be a student. Fun vibes. Decent park that's going to be pretty sick this year.

Ski and snowboard club is still the biggest club on campus I believe. A lot of people to meet. Most are pretty cool. Had a great crew to ski with.

College, like life, is what you make it. When it comes to skiing in the Midwest MTU doesn't have much competition.

When I was there from 2007-2011, the mountain was empty weekdays, most weekends were very small lift lines, pow days small lift lines. I don't think I ever waited longer than 10/15 minutes for any lift. The front range is a couple hour drive.

UBC was amazing, although I think they've raised international tuition considerably since I graduated 6 years ago. If you're Canadian or that's not a problem I'd say go for it 100%. Whistler is about 1.5 hour drive as is Baker. Also the local hills can be good, Seymour has a nice park and fun night skiing. But beyond skiing, Vancouver has so much rich culture that you certainly won't find in Montana or Utah. It takes a minute to wrap your head around the fact that if you're white, you'll be a minority on campus, but it's truly a microchosom of the world. Also the variety of ethnic food isn't something you'll find anywhere in the states except perhaps NYC. Nothing like a good 3 AM hotpot.

MSU and UU are going to be closer to skiing and almost certainly cheaper, but you won't get the experience of meeting people from all over the world and going outside if your comfort zone.

I go to UBCO (UBC's second campus in kelowna) and I'd definitely recommend. If you like cities then Vancouver is nice but it's a massive campus and a big city which which isn't what I'm into personally. UBC Van also isn't that close to skiing. The north shore has great parks but its a solid drive to get up to whistler. Whistler is sick and probably has the best terrain around here but I always see crazy lifelines and overcrowding there.

UBCO is a way smaller campus with a really great outdoors community. I help run the ski club (@ubcoountainriders on instagram) and I think we're the biggest club on campus. It's about 45min to big white which is a super fun smaller resort and then theres a ton of other skiing within a few hours. Revelstoke and sun peaks are both around 3 hrs and whitewater, red, and kicking horse this are all within like 4 hours. Theres also a ton of good ski touring around revy, rogers pass, the
coquihalla, Sicamous, cherryville, ect. Theres also great climbing, mountain biking and camping to do in the summer and kelowna is a big destination for wineries and golfing if you're into that

I would highly recommend and consider going to WSU in Gunnison. (Western Colorado University) When I went to school there I got so many days in after classes, no traffic, barely any lines. Also, they have some really talented rippers on the free ide team. They used to have a freestyle ski and snowboard team that I was lucky enough to be around when they still funded and cared about it. Currently those freestyle teams don't exist anymore with the university, but thankfully the freeride team still exists, join it! Only downside is being a little far away from the i70 parks if you like park skiing. Cb does not have good parks.

It’s u of u all day, there’s an actual fuck ton of skiers who go here, and the cottonwoods/pc are all extremely close

Western Washington University. 90% acceptable. Strong Marine and Outdoor science programs, really great industrial design program. 1.5ish hours from baker. Bellingham is an interesting spot depending on what your into. Some of the best mountain biking real close. Sport and trad climbing on highway 20. If you have a sled Washington pass is unlike anything you’ve ever skied before. lots of carhartt, some but limited real carhartt users, if you drop out you can easily become a commercial fisherman and ski all winter. There are lots of curtain banged individuals with superiority complexes that base their personality around paying lipservice to leftist politics. You can have quite the existence up here with out em tho. Rents going up and housing prices have doubled in the last 5 years. Imagine the combination of Bozeman and Seattle and that’s WWU.

UVM is also incredibly expensive for anyone out of state. Not speaking for OP, but I went out west from the east coast for less than a 1/4th of the cost and got 6X the snowfall. If you are a skier first, go out west for school. East coast skiing does not compare.

in 2007 I had like 6 people from NS on my floor alone, my roommate was from NS, not to mention NS was alot more popular then too, welcome to the club brother.

I see allot of people talking about UBC, great school both my sisters go there, it might’ve just been circumstances but it seemed hard to get in to. I have a twin sister we both did full IB, I had a 1380 on the SAT and a 3.85 GPA and she had a 1440 and a 4.0 GPA. We both got waitlisted for science and she eventually got in but I didn’t. So if you are applying there either make sure your grades are good, or your application is really good. Why I said it might’ve just been circumstances is that I’m a Canadian citizen who isn’t a resident in Canada, and I applied right when covid started so that may have affected things.
