Pure pressure is probably one of the greatest things that ever existed in skiing. Personally for me I love it when I am in a split decision about whether I should jump of a cliff(or a jump/rail if your more into the park) or wait for more snow first. When someone bellows such a melodious," YEWW!" or "Send it!" it makes you feel like sort of an entertainer. Like people come to watch your show performed live. It's great that someone random just pushed you over your mental block and allowed you to progress. However, today someone did the opposite of hyping me up. I was talking to my friend about which landing under a looked the best (I was standing on cliff that had two pretty flat landing split by a track) when a guy yelled, "you won't do it pussy, you won't!" on the chair lift. First off, the dude looked like a middle age dad with rental skis (not that looks mean anything). Why though? Why can this guy say, " You got this brotha, The landing looks spectacular". I don't get why people heckle all the time but never back it up. If this guy said this, then came down and stomped the cliff in front of me without spotting his landing, fair play. I guess this should probably just end up in the rant thread. Also this may just seem like I'm just butt hurt and soft, but I honestly just ignored him and thought to myself I might just put this on Newschoolers. By the way, I stomped it pussy if you see this.

Wow what a douche. Any negative people on chairlifts totally ruin the vibe. Only encountered one of these before and naturally at Killington. Otherwise the chairlift hype is the best. Someone people don't like the pressure but showing off under the lift is always a blast, especially when you get a rukus going in the crowd. On a pow day? All time great.

Man this same shit happened to me this year. Was standing under the lift line looking at the smaller drop just eyeing the landing while some turds yelled “you won’t do it pussy” but it wasn’t even big or anything. Some people are weird.

Chairlift hype makes you so happy when they yell, but there’s always someone that gets mad for no reason, we’re all skiing to have fun right? Why don’t we hype up everyone that sends something dope, if you see a kid sending some dope shit or even a grandpa hype them up they deserved it.

Chairlift yelling should only be positive or encouraging. I clank poles from the chair when someone yardsales or stomps something. Generally in ski culture and in general, people are too self conscious. No one cares what skis you've got or how good or shitty you are. There's alway someone worse or better anyway. Might as well be stoked on everything.

Im all for positive chairlift hype. Not so much before sending it, but after sending it (and stomping it) i do enjoy the yells from the lift.

now i dont really like negative hype at all, but what do you guys think about heckling a jerry that falls below you on the lift? I personally just yell “YEWWW” or “OOOHHH” (nothing negative) at them as they tumble across the snow.

I got a pretty bad concussion and broke my nose after admittedly trying to show off under the lift. There was lots of cheers from the lift but it kinda pissed me off because I didn't even know how fucked up I was after the slam. I couldn't see straight, all I wanted to do was close my eyes and there was a decent amount of blood dripping from my face. It would've been nice to hear the cheers after I stood up and started walking instead of when the world was spinning when I was on all 4s. I always make sure people are ok after slams before I give em a cheer now.

Yeah same I got concussed from the scorpion and probably almost broke my neck even though they were cheering as soon as I went down. Agree 100p

Alright this is gonna be a long one but I have a story of hype gone bad...

Last year in Jackson a bunch of people from our freeride team took a trip to Jackson during a mega storm cycle in January. Seriously best powder day of my life but since it was so early they were still opening up some of the hike-to terrain for the first time. We hike the white spider towards the end of the day because patrol just opened it and there's a pretty big cliff band towards the bottom of the bowl.

We are all getting ready to drop from the top and hyping ourselves up to hit some of the other features on the face.. Then we see this dude who built up a lip on top of the cliffs and was stomping out an in-run. The cliffs were definitely big but doable if you just rode off them natty. The reasons this dude built up a massive lip I still don't know.

Anyways, with local Jackson rippers being as insane as they are we thought he knew what he was doing so we all started hooting and hollering (giving nothing but positive hype) and then after 10 minutes the dude straight-lines the massive in-run, hits the take off and immediately goes into the hottub position.

We all think "oh shit" and ski down to the cliff band to see what happened. Yhe dude is just in a crater not moving or responding. A couple buddies go down to check on him and he can't move. With the lip he built he no joke went 50-60ft to his back on a buried rock.

Turns out he was on trip from out east with his brother (who was somewhere else) and was on full rental gear. Came to Jackson and just though "fuck it I'm going to go huge " and to his credit he did! But yeah patrol had to skin in to grab him and then sled him to the bottom.

We'll never know what ended up happening to him but he could at least start to wiggle his toes. We all felt kinda bad for building up the anticipation so much but he definitely went bigger than anyone else at Jackson that day!

That's the right attitude. Nice to see so many here that all feel the same.
As far as beginners, remember everyone has to start from the same square.

I guess there will not be much hype from Skyliner for some time now. Powder needs to put in new running ends at Skyliner a long time ago. Sad it has come to this.

You’re 100% right to be annoyed by this. I hate people that tear down instead of buildup. I mean yeah, if I see a buddy of mine crash on a rail, I might joke at him, but when you’re getting ready to send a cliff (props for stomping it bro), you gotta hype a homie up!
